Title: ABS ECU failure - replace pump aswell?

Hello everyone. The ABS ECU packed up on my W 3.0 Elite. Just wondering is it worth risking a second hand one off ebay or is it best to get a recon? Also, do you need to renew the pump? If not does the ecu detach from the pump without having to touch the pipes and bleed the system on refitting?

ECU comes off on its own ... with a little swearing and dexterity !! 6 torx bolts I think .. but a few bits need moving out of the way.

If you remove the pump as well you WILL need a full tech2 session in order to bleed the system properly .. I would advise against that !!

ECU can be replced by a used unit if it comes from the same "model year" and engine, if these are different it needs a tech2 sesion to configure the ECU.

If you have the ECU repaired - BBA Reman did mine - then it slots back on and does not need any reconfiguring.

Ensure the swearbox is empty prior to starting. The bottom bolts have to be done "blind" and patience is needed !!

Hi Geoff.

The ECU comes away from the pump without having to bleed the pump or touching the brake pipes.

If you are quadruple jointed and enjoy a challenge it is possible to remove just the ecu,but not for the faint hearted....others more godlike will tell you it is simple !!
When mine failed it was decided to remove the entire pump from below which was slightly easier,but does require the system bleeding,but usefull if you are due a brake fluid change.
If you can get an identical age/model second hand unit it works out cheaper but you are gambling that it is works ok...my advise is to pay the £120 ish and get it refurbished with a warranty then you know all is well.

With patience and a couple of hours it's not really that bad! (Honest!!)

Check out the various "How To" guides here. I was a bit (well, very) wary before I did mine but it went ok in the end.

Ok thanks everyone for your advice! You're a helpful bunch! I'll set an afternoon aside and get it off whilst doing the other things I've got planned!
