I'd like to change the ATF on my nine year old 100,000 mile 3.2v6. I saw on one thread that it takes 1.3 litres, but the Opie Oils website implies I need 4.5 litres. Please can anyone clarify the quantity of trasmission fliud I need. TIA.

4.5ltr ish
-
dexron 3 4.4ltr thats what autodata say
-
Brilliant, thanks very much Tapper888.
-
theres a method /guide for getting the correct level somewhere..
-
Just purchased ATF and engine oil from Opie Oils. Members get a further 15% discount at the moment so thats handy.
BTW in the maintenance guide it mentions about fitting a new washer. Would I get this from a VX dealer?
-
Yes, you can get the washer from a dealer.Get a filter while your there. Not much point changing the ATF and leaving the old filter in there. ;)
-
Cool, thanks for the tip. Didn't know the autobox had a filter :-)
-
and a gasket if your taking the sump off..(more money)
-
two gaskits for front and rear sumps, or use an instant gaskit of the correct type. The filter (and magnet in the sump) can be cleaned, filter from dealers is 70 odd quid. And i distinctly remember it taking more than 5litres................. surely?
there is a guide in naintenance re the fill procedure, fill to level hole, start engine, re fill, select all gears and check again, test drive check again, or something like.
far better done on a ramp imo.
-
BTW, you will need 6-7l of DIII to replace the ATF in the autobox - it holds about 9l, but its not (easily) possible to get it all out.
Worth buying 2 large cans of Fuch 4000 from Opie.

Forgot to mention prices don't include vat :'(

Think I read somewhere that you could get away without buying the filter, it can be cleaned and reused.
Is this correct?
Mick ;)

How do you clean the filter? Pls excuse my ignorance.
I'm not planning to take sump off, just to replace ATF as I guess its never been done. Would like to get the gearbox software updated too and planning to ask Hotel21 nicely to do this for me once oil change done.

You won't get the oil out without removing the sumps (there's 2). I would buy the kit 2 gaskets and filter from Jpat, (numbers above) as its saves alot of messing about and time ;) Oh and buy a new bottle of shampoo as the old atf stinks and it takes alot of washing to get it out of your hair. I used washing up liquid last time ;)

there is no drain on the autobox, only i fill/level hole. So as Pete says you have to remove both large sump(one with the level hole) and small sump (forward of large sump) to remove the max posible amount of atf, as TB says its not possible to remove all the atf as some is held in the torque converter, box off to remove that.
Filter can be cleaned simply by washing it out with parafin or similar oil based cleaner. The filter material is like scotch pad oven cleaner type material, but alot less dense, its only there to catch large pieces, the magnet will catch finer particals in the sump. This is also backed up by Mark dtm replys i've seen i'm fairly sure. As is the advice re instant gaskit, although i do prefer to use gaskits personally, just saves a few quid if you already habe the correct instant goo. So in theory it possible to do the job with just 6-7 liters of atf. My local auto box man did the job on his ramp for £60 oil supplied, which saves the mess on the drive and the nasty itchy rash atf can give, it drys out your skin after long exposure.

I had the choice of cleaning filter, however it's still on a garage shelf wrapped in news paper. Had I not ordered a new one to play safe I would have simply re-used it as I took it off. On very close inspection it was Ok, cleaning with solvent might in this case have risked contamination, the magnet was coated with a very fine slurry so I suppose I am pleased to say after 80,000 mls an indicated no wear on autobox, still can't understand why I got a T/C "Autobox service req". :y :y
