Title: Can an Omega do all this??
Post by: Sri5 on 03 January 2008, 20:33:24
Hi

I am having to down grade from my current car, a Skoda Octavia VRS estate, to fund an home extension so after much research and asking the missus what she likes the look of, i think an Omega estate fits the bill nicely.

But as you guys run and live these cars, I think this is the best place to ask for a realistic opinion of them. I am not new to vauxhalls or scared of a bit of a play under the bonnet but I have never had an Omega or even sat in one for that matter.

Anway, I my wish list that I need fulfilling is a large enough back seat to accommodate 3 child seats, a huge boot to fit all the associated junk in and a quad bike, and enough power to pull a large caravan up hills without struggling. I am looking to spend about £3000 on a nice 2.6 V6 MV6 estate.

Do you reken it could do alll this without costing more to run and insure than my VRS? All opinions and thoughts welcome please.

Back seat for 3 childs seats .... easily
Pull a caravan up hills ...   easily ( I tow a 1600Kgs van regularly !)
Large boot for junk and a quad bike ....  depends on the size of the quad bike !!!  but the boot of a saloon is certainly large .. so I'll guess you get more in an estate  .. :)

Omega is suitable for your needs but running costs (except the fuel) is highly dependant on the previous owner(s) and car condition...

Ey, dont knock the Skoda - its a reall good car actualy and I've played with it a little  ;) so it really shifts too.

I've seen a couple of MV6 estates for sale, one is a 2.6 and the other is the 3.0 but the running costs of the larger engine could be scary! :o

How many miles would you get from a tank with normal driving??

Oh, the quad is just two inches too big too go in the Skoda so if this boot is significantly bigger then I'll be laughing.

Keep the skoda, why down grade to an Omega, when you can have something as good as a Skoda :y :y

bit quicker than your skoda, will pick up its skirts and really haul ass if you want too!! loading it up doesnt seem to make that much differance fuel isnt the horror some people would have you believe. for a big car it handles well enough, you mite find it a bit strange going back to rear wheel drive but thats about it........recomended :y :y :y

No, not Wakefield, a little village near Hull.

A camper?? We could become travellers instead!!!!  I've had an Astra a couple of years ago and never again - too small. I couldn't put the seat back far enough to be comfy with my lad sat in the seat behind!

......

I think you'll find there's not a lot of difference  in fuel consumption between any of the V6's My 99 3.0 Elite saloon does around 21/22 around town although many here seem to get more.

Could have sworn you were someone else who would be more likely to tell us that they wanted to downgrade from a Skoda to an Omega.  ;D

Omega Estate is probably one of the biggest modernish estates out there.  Fuel economy may be an issue with running costs. 2.5/2.6 auto, probably average 27-29mpg, 3.0/3.2 auto, probably around 23-25mpg. Manual versions 2-4 mpg better.  I base this on mine own experience and my commute to work (horrible 40-50mph A roads, 25 miles).

If the car has been looked after, should be reliable if you are prepared to do a bit of preventative maintenence. Likely the cambelt and the cam cover gaskets may need doing at some point, and regular oil changes will keep it running well.

For cheaper genuine service parts, get a Trade Club card, worth its weight in gold.

I only intended to keep my 1st Omega for a few months, but still have it after 4yrs, and have had a couple of others as well.  I think there is no better car for the money, if you can deal with the fuel costs...
