Title: manual gearstick removal

hiya,
 i want to replace my worn looking manual gear knob on my 2002 DTI, do i have to replace the full stick or is it possible to just take the knob off?

been reading the haynes book and from what i understand it looks like the full gear stick as to be unbolted from underneath the car all as well as linkages
anybody else taken one out??

From memory 4 bolts and the linkage pin :y

The knob is a press fit on the shaft and should pull off but likely to be very tight.

How do you wear a gearstick out when it,hardly moves ;D i onl use P and D. :D
