What are the symptoms of the multi rams not working correctly ?
-
Lack of low down power
-
Doesn't feel quite right but not showing any fault codes only 12 and 31 when not running and 12 when running but i have noticed when i rev the engine with the bonnet up i can't see either of the solenoids moving and i can't find any air/vacum leaks anywhere, just doesn't seem as crisp as normal.

If all the vac pipes are correctly connected than check the first vac box (from MY 98), there are 2 vac pipes connected but it's important how!!One of my friend MULTIRAM system didn't work till the 2 pipes were changed with each other on it..... :y

Mine have given up also. (1998 3.0)
Cant for the life of me fathom out why. Changed both actuators with known working ones, checked pipes and wiring. I just live with it now.
Symptoms are lack of power up until about 4k. BUT, not lack of power as in sluggish....... mine still pulls well, even if it isn't quite as quick as it was.

Broomies Mate,
This sounds exactly like mine, not really gutless but just not how it should be but comes to life if you give it a good prod.
Gsizoli,
I've not had any vacum pipes off for quite some time and the symptoms have only started to show up in the last week or so wrongly connected vac pipes can be ruled out and i can't find any leaks and it's not using any oil or water and tickover is smooth @650 ish just like it always has been.
Not sure what to look at next, what could be causing the multi rams to both stop together, if a solenoid fails surely it would only affect that particular multi ram and not both or am i missing something here ?

any hissing dieing out a couple of seconds after the engine stops?
pull some pipes off at various points and see if its sucking air.
Classic leak point is main pipe from plenum just after the right angle bend next to ac pipe, the clip brakes and they rub together wearing the plastic vac pipe through. If bad enough the m rams pack up.
Tech2 can test them remotely.
Sometimes the one way valves fail in the vac tanks, one on back of air intake as said, one behind polen filter under scuttle.
Any step at 4k rpm is a sign, front one below 4k rear one below 4k i believe.
hth
ps no experience of the electrical side of the system but sometimes the plugs get left off after work done.

I pulled the pipe off the rear solenoid yesterday afternoon to check for vacum and it definately has vacum at the pipe, didn't check the front one though.
couldn't find any obvious leaks, checked all the vacum pipes that run along the nearside of plenum best i could with limited time/access and i can't hear any hissing when i turn off the engine or while it's running.

given your location may be worth pm'ing The Boy for a tech2 session, he's in Brackley.
-
I'll have a look again later as i've got the day off today so i can have a good poke around the vacum pipes etc.
All the climate control is working fine which makes me think it's not vacum related but i could be wrong :y

as luck would have it, I'm going to be in Bristol on tuesday and wednesday - would you like to meet so I can have a look ?

Give a light spray of carb cleaner along the vac pipes whilst the engine is running at tickover, if the engine note changes the carb cleaner is being sucked in by a vac leak.
It's a quick way of finding vac leaks... fix the leak, wipe down with paper towel and you have both a sorted problem and a clean engine :)

I've been looking for a vacum leak and up to now i can't find one, so all good there.
I have taken the front vacum resevoir/tank/ accumulater thingymajig and i may have found the problem. There are 2 nipples set into recesses one large(6mm with a 3mm hole) and one slightly smaller(3mm with a 1.5mm hole) the smaller one of the 2 you can blow and suck through but the larger one seems to be blocked and this is the one that is connected to the "t "piece on the front multiram which then carries on up to the top of the engine and runs around to the rear multi ram. Is there a "one way valve" on the larger of the 2 nipples or is it just blocked ?
Has anybody come across this before or is this normal ?
-
I think i've made progress here.
After finding that the one way valve was solid and i couldn't free it off i decided on the do or die approach and drilled the one way valve out to get air flow through the vacum tank. I drilled down right through the nipple, through the valve and out through the back of the vacum tank ( there's a recess on the back of the tank) and pulled the spring and diaphram out of the hole on the back. I then blanked the hole i had made with 20Drachma coin and some TigerSeal and refitted it all.
Before i started the engine i checked the front and rear multi rams and the pushrods were both fully extended and when i started the engine the front one opened immediately (pushrod was sucked in) and when i turned the engine off it closed again(became fully extended) so i thought i would go for a spin round the block. It seems much improved, much smoother and picks up better at part throttle.
I don't know what the rear multi ram is doing as i can't see when it's being driven but seems as it should be.
How can i now test if they are both doing as they should ?
-
you could test them by having someone press throttle to 4k revs and the rear one should move. ;)
that was how i found my rear one was not working. looks like someone has torn the side of the plastic pipe. must have been rubbing. :)
-
OK i'll have to wait until i have someone here :y
