Title: Auto Gearbox Issues
Post by: Reidy79 on 17 June 2010, 15:37:45
Hi Guys,

New to the forum so please bear with me, I think I have all the salient facts but if not I can get them

My partners dad has an '03, 2.2 Petrol, Omega Estate, Automatic

It has developed an issue which is as follows

When put in drive the indicator lights near the gear lever all light up (his words) and it goes into limp home mode

If he reverts to using it as a manual essentially he can drive the car

He has spoken to a garage who have said it is his ECU and it needs replacing

They have said it would be £700 all in for a replacment ECU, fitted and any investigatory work, he did say they didn't seem entirely confident this was the issue, but seemed to think it was a starting point

He loves the car but is obviously reluctant to throw all this money at it on a whim

I have looked at the FAQ and Common Issues section and notice that there does seem to be a link between the ECU and the gearbox, does this sound like the same issue?

As a side note, can anyone recommend a garage in the South East London area (Greenwich, Lewisham, Eltham) who have more knowledge about these things or aren't potential cowboys?

Sounds like the gearbox selector switch playing up to me.
Oh and a garage clutching at straws because they've no idea what's wrong.
Often taking the switch off the gearbox and giving it a good clean out can cure it but otherwise replacing with a known good one from one of the breakers on here will cure the problem.

That certainly sounds feasible and certainly couldn't hurt, cheers

Is that an easy job?

Edited to Add: I have found the guide, with pictures  :o I'm gonna have to show her dad this place, I think he would like it  :y

I have the same problem , except the lights do not come on. The selector switch is being cleaned up tomorrow,  I will post in a few days whether or not it has cured the problem. Also checking fluid level  at the same time .  This seems to be a fairly ' common' issue, yet it seems several things can create the same symptoms.  But replacing the ECU first is just crazyyyy .

You will be suprised by cleaning the selector switch will more than likely solve your problem as The Captain has said :y
