Title: 3.2 MV6 engine mods?
Post by: viking6152 on 11 June 2010, 09:06:27
Any advice on giving the engine a bit more? Is there a chip for a 3.2? :y

The chip is not replaceable on a 3.2. ECU is a sealed unit. It can be flashed so could possibly be remapped but I'm not sure who would do this or whether the gains would be worthwhile. On any natasp engine the gains are not going to be spectacular.

The Remappers claim up to 20 Bhp, in practice between 5 to 10 more.

Ah right, cheers guys. I have to admit though that i'm not mechanically minded when it comes to cars.If in doubt pay someone! I've been googling though and see that some :-/ :y owners have changed there air filters to K&N filters and fitted cat back exhausts even platinum spark plugs. Do these really do anything, does the car run smoother or run better mpg?

Don't bother with a K and N filter unless you want to change your MAF sensor sometime soon ;)

As mentioned, maybe a cat back system, but over and above that just keep the car well serviced.  Also try different brands of fuel rather than some of the supermarkets that just sell what they get at the best price.  Sounds daft but when I had my carlton I found my local garage's petrol (Cant remeber the brand though) seemed better for the carlton that the 2 other stations down the road.  Run your tank down to the red and they try each using say £20 at time in fuel, best tried over the same routes and speeds to compare say on the journey to work and back.  :y

a polished plenum will gain you more performance than fitting K&N, 3.2 is about as far as its going to go unless silly money is spent, so no cheap go faster mods  :(

It would be easier and cheaper to drop a V8 in  ;)

Don't know where you are based but if you want to enquire further about a remap then contact John at DNA Tuning (http://www.dnatuning.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=149&Itemid=303). He is a really knowledgable guy and will tell you it as it is.

I had a V5 Golf done by him (used to get a forum discount then!) and the improvements were very noticable in pick-up and extra low-down urgnecy as well as better ability to rev out at the top end.

If I could justify the trip back to Stratford upon Avon and knew I was keeping my mig I would get my 2.6 mapped.

As with all remaps though you will need to run 97ron or 99ron to avoid pinking.

For 2K£? Where can I get this? All I have found was around 10000 Euro somewhere in Germany (don´t remember the web page now).

hmmm, so in the entire intake and exhaust system, top end, cams, compression ratio, squish band, all that stuff and whatever else is involved, there are no improvements to be made? no gains to be had? no emmissions issues or compromises to be got round?

Wow, thats got to be a first for production engine.

218 odd bhp from a 3.2 for example? not bad i guess, but surely there's more in there somewhere?

ECU master- from 130£
kompressor mounting + wheels + belt -round 250£
intake manifold -200£

There's always more to come from an engine, it's just a matter of paying for it. ;)

There isn't a lot to be gained by chipping one (OP's question) IMHO and, given the cost involved on these ECUs I would doubt it's worthwhile.

Now, if you were to strip the engine and start again you could probably get quite a bit more power out of it by addressing the areas you mention and others but these days standard production engines don't generally have weaknesses that can be easily exploited for more power - naturally aspirated engines, at any rate.

seem to remember someone in states having cadillac (us omega) that had a supercharger fitted and it was a car specific kit - try as i might i can't find it again on web! car was silver and was a v6 looked like a facelift elite it seemed straightforward with remap being flashed.
