Title: Mini cambelt party
Post by: TheBoy on 28 September 2006, 21:46:14
Not quite the mega party at Marks_DTM earlier this year (that was 7 cambelts on a cold February day), but we're doing a couple of cambelts round Bo Bo's place on Saturday.

Looking forward to it  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Did I read in one of the many threads that breathers were being done?  If so, has someone got a load of carb cleaner?

We need to have one of these up here, either that or the Scottish contingent can hit nottingham in a convoy. That would be cool.  8-)

Try local motor shop, normally around £2 for large aerosol. £10 from Halfrauds....

Will need probably a couple of cans per car, depending how bad they are....

Does this mean that you guys want o-rings, or should we make a run Sat morning since TB has the trade club card?

Not a TC item, so no extra discount (usually get at std trade, which you can normally blag without a card)...

I thought that the most fitting way, since it was the a/c, would be to lay it on the a/c pulley and start the engine. ;)

And the only way to be 100% sure it would start...

Change the crankshaft sensor beforehand.  ;)

Post by: TheBoy on 30 September 2006, 20:09:38
We achieved 2 cambelts, and a set of cam gaskets today.

I'm sure that Bo Bo and Timbuk will now agree that a cambelt is not as scary as it seems.  With the exception of Timbuk shearing a water pump pulley bolt during refitting, no dramas today. The cam cover gaskets went well, with the passenger one being tedious as normal.

All in all a great day, and I thoroughly recommend that any members considering holding some kind of maintenence day go ahead and do it - it really is a good day, a laugh is had, and much is achieved.

Plus a big thanks to Marks_DTM, yet again, for helping out with a query we had regarding cambelt kits...

Big thanks to TB for comming, helping, bringing tools, and especially from me - bringing spare parts.  The bacon butties were great, but it would have been my bacon without TB's trunk full of spare parts!

About 10hrs total.  Minor dramas on the cambelts, but nothing serious in the end.  Again parts problems for me  >:(  Had insisted on 2 kits of cam cover gaskets.  Checked with sales weenie 3 times.  He insisted that it was all I needed.  Guess what?  Only had gaskets for 1 side  :o  This time TB was there, and with a spare set  [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif] So nothing serious in the end there either.

I'm a lot less sore this time  ;)  Was almost perfect in terms of repairs, except one gasket broke leaving me with a decent vacuum leak, and even TB couldn't fix my laptop.  That thing's cursed!  Once moving, the engine runs much better now.  New plugs that aren't completely submerged in oil makes a difference!  Breather's weren't really clogged?!

After 2 weeks I am really liking my Omega.  Maybe repairs are part of the bonding process, but I feel much better to ahve cambelt and cam cover gaskets done.  Car runs great, and except for oil change and a few other extremely minor things it doesn't need anything else badly enough to be worth worrying about.  Result!

OK, a BIG BIG thanks to Timbuk, theolodian & TheBoy!
My mechanical experience before today was basically changing oil/fliter plugs/leads, just really basic stuff, but with their help I did it. It's not really that hard & if you've got any experience with the spanners; you can do it. If I had to do it on my own tomorrow; I could (well if my back's recovered).
Thanks again.

Well I plugged in the Tech2 into Timbuk's car, so I can conclusively prove if it was a crank sensor or not...

But before I say, we'll let Kev sweat it out a bit longer....

If it was, or wasn't, the fault would have been cleared by now anyway, so that's not conclusive.  ;)

Theolodian, I've tried to look up part numbers of the seal you need for breather system, and I reckon its:

GASKET, ADAPTOR, ENGINE VENTILATION    90467543

Double check with dealer though...

Cheers, I'll head over there in the morning.  Going to do my scuttle drain and headlight today.  May do oil change, but having trouble working up the motivation  ;)

Scuttle drain cleaned up a treat with Henry.  So did pollen filter!

Did everything I could with headlight motor connector.  Still has fault.

Except for idle going vroom vroom engine runs great!  Now I believe that it is 200HP.  Not fast, but it will get around people on B roads.  Going to dealer to get that stuff in a bit.

It could also be a problem with the levelling motor - sometimes they seize a bit. Not sure how to free them though...

Yeah, the next step is to take the headlight out and start poking around.  I may not have a chance to get to it for two weeks or so.

Yeah, that's the part number.  Idles fine now.  Didn't have to disconnect hoses, just undo the 3 bolts and pop it loose.

Don't know, they forgot to charge me for it and the spray paint.  Figured it was only fair since they messed up so much on the parts I got earlier!  ::)
