i have a very good 96 mv6 3.0, and i would like to keep it that way. therefore, i'm devising a (hopefully) full-proof maintenance plan.
only actually tricky bit is the engine it self. the rest of the car is usual stuff that every mechanic can handle.
as for the engine, I have a set of questions :D
part a - sensor bits
crank sensor
cam sensor
knock sensor
MAF sensor
lambda sensors
ERG
coolant temperature sensor
part b - ignition
dispack
HT leads
plugs
part c - gaskets
camcover gasket
intake manifold gaskets
exhaust manifold gaskets
headgasket
crankshaft seals (front + rear)
crankcase gaskets
part d - other
toothed belt (with tensioners and rollers)
auxiliary belt
questions are:
- which of this parts have to be replaced with NEW GENUINE parts, and which can be replaced with USED or REPLACEMENT parts?
- what are the usual weak points?
this is very important, because i'm planing to gradualy replace all the parts that are prone to failing.
and to have all the parts for spare. but i need to know which parts i can buy used or not-oem, and which parts MUST be genuine.
if i'm missing something, please write it...

To replace all of those would be costly. You'd probably be better off selling yours and buy a newer one.
If your car is ok i would only replace when it shows signs of wear / breaking (except for the 40,000 mile / 4 yr toothed belt / tensioners).
I would recommend replacing the gaskets and belts with new genuine parts and i'm sure people who know more than me will advise shortly.

actually, all is working quite good at the moment.
but i want to take precaution, because MV6 parts are real pain in the ass to source here in croatia >:(

part a - sensor bits
crank sensor...................genuine only, often fail, keep a spare in the boot
cam sensor...................... Bullet proof on the v6
knock sensor.....................ditto usually trapped wire after work done
MAF sensor........................very reliable on 2.5 /3.0
lambda sensors.................worry about it if it brakes
ERG..................................can be problematic, clean and try again
coolant temperature sensor...buy new bottle if it plays up
part b - ignition
dispack..........can fail, search the Bosch part number.
HT leads........any v 6 make, but don't buy the cheapest, the lengths are always wron
plugs.............vx are cheapest for plugs here
part c - gaskets
camcover gasket...............genuine only, clean breathers yearly, see guide
intake manifold gaskets.....usually ok just be sure they are seated correctly when re assembling
exhaust manifold gaskets
headgasket
crankshaft seals (front + rear)
crankcase gaskets
part d - other
toothed belt (with tensioners and rollers)......... replace after 40 k or 4 years, contitech, gates, skf all good makes
auxiliary belt.........ditto, contitech

- what are the usual weak points? Breathers blocked, crank sensor, also clean idle control valve regularly

There is a good guide on oof recommended service intervals in FAQ section. If auto box, service ATF every 60k

Just be aware that some parts have "use by" dates, so stockpiling bits may not be a good idea - one such item is the cambelt kit .. these come with a use by date as they are also time limited for changing ... (4 years)

Service intervals link below, no need to go any further than that.

Except oil cooler, would it be worth changing, is it plastic on this model year? Can anyone advise? Not sure. :-/
