Hey guys,
last summer when i got the car i was playing around with it and left the aircon on with the bonnet open and idling for 30mins, by the end of that on level 1 strength the temperature using my temperature probe was -0.4 degrees celcius, BLOODY COLD, my breath was condensing, outside temperature was 18 degrees, i did it the other day and it wouldnt go lower then 9, now that was at 26 degrees so i need to wait for a cooler night to test it really but im just wondering if anybody is cool enough like me :P to have actually measured how cold their aircon will go,
also can i have peoples opinions on call out aircon regassers vs going to garages or airco places etc
thanks

If you had a temperature of - anything at the air vents then something is very wrong....I would guess the expansion valve was stuck open.
Normal air outlet temp is around 5C, any lower and ice forms on the evaporator which blocks the airflow so is prevented from happening by a temp sensor on the expansion valve.

What you got in it R22(freezer gas) instead of 134a ;D ;D :y
-
yep crazy cold, that was on level one fan with the air con on for a long time just idling, im gonna try it again as soon as i get the car back and the night temps cool to under 20 degrees,
so what do other people get when they set it as LOW,
how low can you go lol :P

I'd suggest it was an erroneous reading. A temperature of 0celcius at the vents would freeze the evaporator and probably damage it.
4 - 6 celcius is what should be coming from the vents of a fully functioning car Air Con unit.
Mine runs at 7.6, so IMO, working well enough not to need attention.

ok so whats everyones opinion on the mobile regassers etc vs garages and others like Kwit fit, in terms of price, levels of service and duration of the life of the gas added etc, also can anyone recommend anything specific from personal expericence that was good
thanks

An Air-Con service is just that.... a service.
AFAIK, they drain the system completely, creating a vacuum. This is how they initially tell if the system is leak free. They then re-pressurise with the correct refrigerant, which should include a dye. The sye will glow under UV light. A UV light is then passed around the engine bay whilst the AirCon is powered up to full, checking for leaks.
I've never bothered with DIY cans, as everyone I have spoken to says they are a waste of time, especially considering you only pay a little more for a professional re-gas.
Kwik-Fit were doing a deal whereby you didn't pay if they didn't reduce the temperature or some shizzle. If they are still doing that deal, then go for it.
I'd rather take the car to an Air-Con specialist, and not a 'your exhaust brackets need replacing, and as we have to take the wheels off, you'd be better off having a couple of tyres and a set of brake-pads' type 'centre'.

Had my system checked and then refilled recently, as it had simply stopped working completely !
Got a local chap to do the deed - independant - and works a treat :) Personally, have always trusted a well-regarded guy than a Kwik-Fit etc.

just did some testing on the way home and here are the results, all measured with my digital thermocouple
Outside Temperature 20 degrees celcius
Coolant Temperature 92 degrees celcius
Climate Control On, Central Vent
Fan Speed Level 1 - 8 degrees celcius
Fan Speed Level 9 - 12 degrees celcius
What does everybody think,
im sure its not as cold as it used to be and so im thinking about having it regassed as i dont have any records of it being done recently
opinons and can anybody name a "specific" company who is good in terms of price and service
Thanks

Recently had mine re-gassed in Swindon .. £39.99
Temps recorded with OAT 27 C
Vent temp before regas : 14 C
Vent temp after regas : 7C
Regas took 45 minutes as they do a proper vacuum to remove all old gas and moisture, No leaks suspected as there was still 82% (by weight) of the gas put in 2 years ago. I'm told ..... that the system loses about 10% per year anyway .. so seems about right.
Now runs icy cold :)

had ths problem too before refilling the ac with gas :).. its really really cold now even if there are 40 degrees.

Hi Entwood thanks for your stats,
when you have 14 degrees and then 7 degrees what fan setting was this on, as the higher the fan setting the warmer the air obviously,
i cant seem to get mine to go lower then 8 degrees this year when last year i had it down to a minus figure at one point, it was amazing i left it idling on the driveway and watched the temperature fall and i blew into the air stream and my breath was condensing, final figure -0.4 degrees lol, anyway im guessing the car hasent had a regas in a while so im wondering how much of a drop i can expect,
if i have the fans on between 3-6ish then the temperature is around 10 degrees and then it rises to around 12 when at full blast,

Entwood, £39.99 seems very reasonable compared to the prices ive seen online looking at google, can you tell me what company this was and was it a national chain or a callout service etc, thanks

This might not work using a new phone !
