Hi, i have a loud knock from the front of the car, and has been narrowed down to the front right caliper. Has anyone experienced this before? both bolts top n bottom are done up tight, except when you hit it with your hand on the top it clunks?
Im totally baffled on this any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi ,have you checked to see if the piston is seized allowing the pads torattle? :-[ :-[
-
it sounds as though the caliper slide pins are worn and making the noise ,make sure that the springs on top of the pads are still there and under tension when everything is bolted up tight
-
Thanks for the replys. How do i check if the caliper is seized? ive had both slide pins out but to be honest i wudnt know if they were worn or not. How do i tell?
Should there be the springs on the top of both pads? i notice there is a metal plate behind the piston side pad, shud there be one on the outer pad too?
Sorry im abit clueless when it comes to brakes. :-?

the springs are on top of the pads and are compressed when the caliper is fitted,if one is missing it will allow that pad to rattle
-
it knocks in and out, not up and down if that makes sense?

No expert let me describe what I think,

1. Lower marked "x" either side, pins are broken or stuck inside on one side or both.
2. Upper "x" mark on both side, the pin tightening bolts are not properly engaged or broken or in a condition not to be able to securely tigthen.
3. Middle "x" the piston is stuck or not moving properly.
Hope it triggers some ideas. ;)
PS: Hope not that the rotor is not seated properly and vertically, little likelihood though.

Well both 1 and 2 are fine, ive had the slide bolts out and are properly oiled up and move freely but snug, and the bolts tighten like they should.
Which only leaves the piston i suppose? and pads.

Just to add, the noise stops when the foot brake is applied so i guess the piston is working correctly.?

I noticed when I was checking my brakes that sometimes the backing on the pad that the piston pushes on to pops either fully or partially. You may want to check the back of the pads too even though from wear indication one may think these are good.
We have assumed all along that your wheel bolts are tight to spec and the rotor is mounted properly and you cannot move it laterally (pulling out or pushing in with your hand).
Good luck.

are the caliper frame bolts tight where the frame bolts to the hub assembly (18mm socket)

ANy play in the wheel bearing.....

I dont think so, although i havent noticed it. But like i say it goes away when u put ur foot on the brake, it has been diagnosed to the actual caliper itself, it just rattles for sum reason, and when u go over the bumps it sounds like the engines about to fall out lol. it reli loud!!

both pads should have springs on to stop them moving in caliper if they havent then change pads noise should go.
