Title: Auto box again
Post by: Tonka. on 25 June 2010, 20:01:05
Some of you may remember I had to fit a new auto box last year. My AR25 messed up and I swapped it for an AR35. Thanks for your help once again over that.

Guess what the AR35 has started to do  ;D ;D

Hanging in second, thumping into third and then limping. Borrocks!!!

It started off this week with a mild thud going into third and has got progressively worse. It is a lot worse when the box gets really hot. The recent hot days have really shown it up whilst running my parents around Lincoln. It seems better when the box is not so hot  :-/

To make matters worse, I start a new job on Monday. First permanent work in two years.

I have checked the ATF level (engine running through the gears etc) and the level is okay BUT the fluid is brown and smelly. Yet, it has only been in a year  :-/ :-/

Any ideas before I go mad with frustration  :y :y :y

Might be but hope it isn't the thrust washer. If it is then the bits will be in the sump. Also don't like the sound of the fluid being brown and smelly. How many miles since you replaced it?

However someone with more knowledge will no doubt be along shortly.

The box had a new thrust washer fitted last year, in place of the silly plastic GM one. Sorry forgot about it  :-[

Its done about 7000 miles since last Jan when it went in  :y

Sounds like 2-3 solenoid. Was the box & T/C thoroughly flushed before adding new ATF

The whole lot was flushed, even the cooler at the front.

This solenoid chappy. What does it involve to remedy it?

Thanks Rob. I have had the sumps off before, so am okay there  :y

With the sumps off are they obvious and easily accessible?

Of course the big question....where on earth do I get them from and what sort of cost are they?

Yes to obviousness and accessibility. Pricewise, couple of years back, about £80 or thereabouts. Nowadays, no idea. Maybe one of the breakers got an old box lying around for cannibalising

Thanks all of you, was ready to have the car crushed this afternoon  :y :y

Could a faulty crank sensor throw a gearbox fault? Seems a long shot  :-/

well i can bring a whole set of solenoids over, sump gaskets might be an idea unless you fancy using instant gasket, then its down to what tools you have in your toolbox as well as axle stands, not forgetting the dexron3 atf, anyhow let me know when youve got time & hopefully i can make it. :y

I am okay for tools etc alf. Changed one of these buggers already. The full set of solenoids would be brilliant. I shall source more ATF, a filter and gaskets. Get the thing sorted once and for all  ;D ;D

That is a personal view on this type of fault when gearbox hangs and then goes limp mode. Just a theory that incorrect engine speed detected by gearbox forces limp mode.

Just been out into town, in traffic cues and typical urban traffic.
The car behaved perfectly.............

But it did not get as hot as yesterday. I think I may change the ATF tomorrow and see how it goes.

How do I give it a good flushing? ?
Title: Re: Auto box again
Post by: Tonka. on 29 June 2010, 16:00:53
Well, that didn't work........ ::) ::)

Clunking again around second and third.

Lost all drive twice today. First gear fine, second gear fine. Then third gear and the car just revs with no drive.

Into neutral and back into drive and all is well again.

My question is. Can this be cured? Would appriciate all input (alf ;))

Yes, I am going to. Just waiting for unluckyalf to reply. I'm sure he will  :y :y

When I dropped the oil on Sunday, it was black. Only been in a year. So I will consider Sundays oil change a flush  ;D ;D
