Title: Just fixed my battery problem - Temp/perm fix?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 04 January 2008, 16:33:50
I just went to halfrauds, bought a new terminal for £2.99.

I cut the old one off, and noticed that it is a really bad connection, the wire was extremely brittle where it went into the terminal.

I cut the bad end of the wire off, and stripped it back until I found some good stuff. I then crimped this into the new terminal, attached all the aux power leads to it, and put it back on the battery.

Just went for a drive with all the electrics on (seats, the lot) and it's now not even getting warm.

Interestinly, since this point, I've had another look at the LPG software. I've noticed for a while, that the PETROL injector durations have all been quite a way apart, but since doing this, they only differ by at most 0.1ms.

LPG software now reports the voltage to be a stable 13.4 volts.

It seems absolutely fine on gas at the moment, too...

Can I consider this new terminal to be a long term fix, or should I still replace the whole cable?

You crimped it on....where the hell did you get a crimp tool for that gauge wire?

I don't LITERALLY mean crimp.... ;D .. It was just my expression.

The cable is screwed into the terminal by three screws, with a little device to spread the load. It holds very well...

Thanks goodness.....a crimp tool to do an effective crimp for battery terminals are normaly hydraulic! (used to use them when I worked at Alsthom)

Hehe - so a perm fix? Or still replace the cable?
Maybe see how it goes?

Crimp tools are available here (silly money though).

Sounds like it's improved matters (must have done if the terminal's now cold). I'd still have a look at your charging voltage to eliminate a problem with the alternator.

If you're now getting a good, stable charging voltage at the battery (high 13's to low 14's) I'd regard it as fixed as long as there's enough free slack in the wire to cope with a bit of engine rocking. May be able to liberate a bit of slack from the other side of the engine if required.

Very big family tree that

And I do know about the merger of Alsace and BTH

Alsace ?. I know about British Thomson-Houston, cause I worked at Marconi for a while (too long!) but never heard of them, please tell.

Ken

P.S. it used to upset some of the older Marconi types if you referred to BTH as "Bloody Thick 'n' Heavy.

Alsace is the French company which developed the TGV, might be out on spelling but AFAIK Alstom are the remainders of all French train builders and 90% of British train builders, only Brush is still in British hands.
