Post by: molliemoo060304 on 02 July 2010, 22:17:56
My dad was driving my car down the moterway and it started overheating he pulled over to let it cool down. when he started off again he heard a noise and the power steering totally failed . he has managed to get it back to me, any idea's what this could be?
any help greatly appreciated :-/

Sounds like the aux belt might have failed .. drives both the power steering AND the water pump .. but I would also expect the battery light on as the alternator would have failed as well .. :(

You may be lucky, there is a fuse under the bonnet, worth checking. I have no idea why a fuse is needed, but if it blows then the steering is very stiff. Good luck.

Power steering on the Omega is speed sensitive .. this is controlled electronically with a feed from the ABS ECU ... electronics have fuses .. :)

The fuse would explain the power steering but not the overheating or the noise .. :(

There is a fusebox under the bonnet, running alongside the nearside wing, triangle shape, in there are some blade fuses, not sure which one but check them all. If in doubt I can take some pics for you but it is easy enough to find.

I think it's a 30 amp one (Green), this also covers the Cigarette Lighter, so see if that works.

Fuse is under the steering wheel.

Just to add, if the fuse has blown (as mine did - faulty heater pads in seat - was after the TC but caught the seat heater instead)  noticable heavyness in the power steering but only the speed sensitive side of it, if the auxilly belt has gone then the steering becomes incredibly heavy and you need to be Desperate Dan to turn it.

Ignition light should come on as soon as the belt gives way and then the warer temps jumps up.

Also alot of other things fail if the fuse blows - see the link I posted.

My money is on the auxillary drive belt. (or drive belt tensiober)

Thanks Mr S, I had this fuse go on my last Mig, but the fuse was under the bonnet on that one - (or I am going even more senile).
