Title: Steering problem
Post by: mr ICE man on 06 July 2010, 21:30:21
Since buying the elite I've put stienmez suspension all new droplinks and wishbones but something is up with the steering.the springs came with hubs and all complete set up off darth.I'm going to get the alignment done on fri but steering feels dangerous almost has a mind of it's own!when going around a corner it will pull sharply in the same direction as I'm steering more than I'm turning the wheel and under braking the car steering wheel pulls straight but wheels don't move.could this be the steering box needing tightening?if so how do I do it?the off side track rod end will move forward and back when moved by hand but no movement left to right.or is this simply that allignment needs doing? Thanks guys! :y

Sounds like the alignment is way out....which is no surprise following a full suspension change.

WIM first , get the alignment sorted it will be miles out. Then check tyres, what do you have on there ? I had falkens and the car was all over the place , horrible handling despite several trips to WIM. Replaced with Conti's rear and dunlops front and problem has gone.

Weds, on here, had alot of tramlining issues with p zero's.

But if the car was ok before the work and is now problematic directly after the work, then the work is to "blame" so to speak.

Where the wishbone bokts tightened wheels loaded at the correct ride hight?

Was something approaching the correct camber angle set via the 2 bottom shock bolts, ie 1°.10 mins, which on my car with 17 inch wheels equates to about 15mill gap between shock body and wheel rim....?

If the bottom shock body bolts where just done up any old how, as is usual with back street garages, then odds are its on max camber and will dive into a turn at any twitch of the steering wheel. Plus the toe setting will be all wrong as well.
