hi folks unsure if anyone can help but will give it a try my wife drives 3litre auto elite yesterday on way home from work tc light cae on and also auto trans warning light and then car power steering went much to wifes shock she managed to avoid three cars and pulled over she said car making awful noise unsure of what sort of noise AA man was called he thought cambelt had slipped manged to drive 100yards to our house  i have turned engine over tonight and it started very noisy as AA man has left off some air intake parts but i could hear slight ticking (valve hitting piston maybe ) AA man very keen to buy car off wife offered 200 pounds for it .. i was wondering if anyone knows of any other faults it could be ? thx paul p.s its a v6 model :'(

Take the aux belt off.....then start it up and see if the awful noise has gone.

If pistons were hitting valves then it would not be running.

Also, cambelt failure would not result in power steering loss and warnings on gearbox etc if the engine was still running.....loss of alternator output (on a weak battery resulting in autobox and TC warnings) and pas pump which are all aux belt driven could....

Sorry to butt in but my aux belt tensioner failed recently... the plastic pulley survived, it was the big springy part that pushed the pulley out of it's mount. Is this unusual...

I have driven a V6 Omega with bent valves to get it home :D
The revs needed to be kept on else it would stop plus the brakes didn't then work ;D
It nearly got me home then seized up with borewash  ::)
It made a terrible noise  ;D

But answer to your question mate, if the valves are bent yes it could still start up, will sound terrible though..
You need to have a look and see what has happened, or see if someone would hae a look for you.
If the AA man has offered you £200 for it straight away I would smell a rat, may even phone and report him >:(

if engine is that bad just get another set off tops there some on the bay, and new one's on vx parts for £90 each as on sale :y or at least take tops off and see if the pistons are ok then decide. before putting in on the bay etc.

I remember that one youth, it was so funny, still the old girl nearly made it home before she gave up the ghost ;)

hi mate,

Sorry to hear about your car, have you managed to get it into a garage yet or you putting it on ebay?

similar thing happened to me in a corsa once on the motorway, lost power engine management light came on and very loud knocking sound, turned out the cam had snapped and bend a valve >:( £650 later the car was back on the road.
