Yes, Steve is being truthful.
We have come to an arrangement where he has offered me a fantastic figure to buy back the Silver facelift LPG that I bought from him a few months ago...
I love the car too, but I couldn't turn it down.
I hope you enjoy her once more, Steve :y

It was worth the wind up :P

Why would you want to go and do something like that???
Trading in that lovely car, which costs bugger all to run and maintain, for a POS Vauxhall?
::) ::) ::)

8 grand on an Astra??? ya should have spent 2k on an omega and 500 quid on a gas conversion!, spend the rest on fuel!
AstraH nice as they look, have a few build issues compared to the G.
Not driven a H, but the astraG gave me massive back ache when driving, the seats are crap!
-
i always thought that you were a little strange, but now you have proved it to me.
Part x an Alfa for that heap of..............Metal.
You are taking the P*ss arnt you?????
-
So whats the story then?..........alfa traded for a facelift, so where does the astra come into it?........did you give STMO and astra or did he give you one aswell as the Alfa/, the latter makes more sense ;D ;D [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] :o ::)
-
It suits my purposes exactly, and the savings I will make on fuel, tax, insurance and repairs will more or less pay for it.
Tunnie, I COULD have spent 2K on an omega and £500 on a gas conv., but then I'd spend all day on here asking how to make it run right.
Cost new £15000, 10 months old £8495 minus £2000 for the alfa, it makes sense to me :y ;D
I've got no MOT till 2010, no service for 20000 miles and my ins and fuel is halved. :y

woeful build quality (esp interior) aside, they are not a bad car. Driven quite a few. Also had the estate version to get from Dijon to Calais when the MV6 decided it wanted to go home on a low loader, and it was OK on that trip (got to be 300+ miles). Hit a bloody great crow at about 180kph, that made a mess though - fortunately, AVIS had marked every panel damaged when I picked up the car earlier :-X

And Evans Halshaw now own the alfa Mike, so off you go ;D

Whats the story on these weird wipers Jaime?
Nothing special about them. Some are rain sensitive instead of intermittent, otherwise normal...
-
As i was on Holiday i drove my friends Zafira, all the extras you could imagine.
The thing i hated the most though, was the stupid Indicators, took me a while to get used to them.

I thought I spotted something a while ago about them being a pain with this "quick touch" for three flashes etc........ :-/

Yes, Astra-H has lane changer indicators as well (as do most modern Vx/Fords etc). Takes a few miles to get used to them, but I quite like them...

Not just that, you tip them on a little harder and they stay on if you dont turn the steering wheel far enough they do not go off again, unless you tip in the other direction again, that took a little getting used to ::)

HA! Easy peasy. Try an alfa, they just do as they rather feel like, same as the wipers ;D

The depreciation on the Astra will make the Alfa's fuel bill appear a bargain. You've seen how much it has depreciated already, and at that age it's still on the very steep part of the curve.
You do have the warranty so largely worry free motoring for a few years, but that doesn't come cheap even if it is a "sensible" car.
Maybe you're too in love with FWD after being wooed by the Alfa to consider coming back to meega ownership :D

Surely then spending £8000 on a nearly new car that will depreciate loads over the next few years isn't the best approach? It's nice having a warranty and an economical engine, but unless you do huge mileage or keep the car for many years, it would be far cheaper in overall terms to buy something like a 2003 V6 Omega. It's been through the worst of its savage depreciation, so you're getting a lot more car for a lot less money. It costs more to run, but unless you're very unlucky and have a major failure, it's still going to be a lot cheaper as it will lose less value. Even more so if you're paying for the new car with credit.
I've had a few cars more expensive than £8k, but of those I've never got less than 90% of what I paid come resale. Mainly because I only pay significant amounts of money for "fun" cars, that tend to be a bit rarer and more desirable. It helps that I'm not using them every day of course, keeping the mileage down. For the daily chores, I'd rather have a cheap runaround, perfect example being the 2.0 Audi I put about 50,000 miles onto over the course of 3 years, and sold for only £300 less than I paid for it. Add to that it was peanuts to run (all the parts were cheap from Euro Car Parts and it never broke down), and that is the perfect example of cheap motoring! I was sorry to see it go, but the lack of power (only about 115 BHP) and front wheel drive were the two things I really disliked about it, and the main reason I bought a 3.0 Omega for my runaround.

I have seriously considered a V8 ZT, they come with a 6 speed box and are apparently really good fun to drive. Just after Rover went under there were nearly new ones going for less than half list price, due to fears over warranties being worthless. Power output is a little disappointing though at 260 BHP, it's not bad for the kind of car it is, but for a modern V8 it's pretty poor. The same year BMW 545i was putting out around 340 BHP.
Still, a bit of a bargain considering the price they can be had for. I saw one pulling into a petrol station once with what looked like oil smoke coming from the 4 pipes :o at first I thought the engine must have blown but the guy just filled up, paid, and drove off as normal! Didn't sound anything unusual for a V8 so no idea what was going on there :-?
-
Hmm just read the review of the MG ZT on Pistonheads and apparently it only has a 5sp box... I always thought they were 6sp :-/
http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=138&i=9198
Probably not really necessary in what is a torquey rather than revvy V8, but it's nice having a 6sp for allowing a high top gear for relaxed cruising without compromising the spacing of the ratios. It's one thing I think the Omega really misses, the ratios are too widely spaced to accommodate its M-way munching high 5th gear.

That's the idea. I've had enough of repair/maintenance bills on big cars. Time will tell if I can live without the power or not.

I guess that's the difference between a low-tech US engine and a high-tech european engine. I wonder which one's the sod to work on though?
A mate of mine's got one (had one a couple of years ago when I last saw him). They do sound lovely and it went nicely. I'm just not a fan of the retro styling though, TBH.

Really?
That's about the only Fiat bit I'd want in any car. They seem to be unburstable, while the rest of the car rots and shorts out around them. ;D

True. When I hired a Mustang in the US (brand new one, not a proper Mustang unfortunately ;) ) I was amazed at how slow it felt. It really felt quite pedestrian, I've no idea how they manage it. To be fair it was a convertible and an automatic, I'm sure the 6-speed coupé would be a lot more lively, but those are almost impossible to find as rental cars in the US -- believe me I looked.
Saying that, the Corvette LS7 engine is no slouch, putting out 500 BHP. It is a 7 litre mind, but even then that's a pretty impressive BHP/litre for an American V8 8-)

I think it would be slow regardless of transmission, just a lazy engine and poor power to weight.

Oh dear. Why can't you all just be happy for him. He's just paid £00's to keep the Omega going, £00's more with the Alfa and now £00's more on an Astra.
Haven't you realised he just likes spending money :)
Good on yer Grandad, and the Astra is far more fitting for running the grand kids round - but no more racing at the lights for you ;)

That new Astra is probably as punchy as the Omega off the lights...

Yes, but after 50 mph its bye bye ashtray, 4000 rpm and second multiram open - we's flyin man!

True, but,
I recently drove a modern Turbo diesel commonrail injection vauxhall. And - I'd be prepared to put money on it that, up to 90mph, it's as fast (if not faster) than my V6 Omega!

If I've said it once, I've said it...........omegas, except in police guise, are not fast cars.
-
well Steve, you wanted an Alfa and youve owned one. Job done !
Astra - kind of really like them - drove one for a few days anout 6 months ago..... :y
Good luck to ya !! :)

I have been quite impressed by the Astra H, not a huge fan of the interior but, they are one of the best built cars in thier class.
And the 1.6 16V engine is Gm, not Fiat......only one or two (not all i.e the 1.3CDTi) of the diesel engines were a joint development with Fiat at a time when Gm had almost a 40% stake in them!
Enjoy it, they are a good reliable everyday run about.

The figures speak for themself Jay. 0-60 in 8secs+ is not quick.

Has the Alfa gone yet???

I can get my MV6 to 60 in 7 secs.... OK it's a 3.0 manual so quicker than most, but even at that it's not what I'd call fast. The biggest problem with Omegas is the crappy gear ratios, they're too wide for the peaky 24V engines to satisfy the motorway cruising ability (and improve fuel economy no doubt). A 6 speed box, with 6th gear being the equivalent of the old 5th and all other ratios closer and lower, would work wonders for the acceleration and drivability.

I think Vx designed the Omega as a sedate, luxury, cruiser .. not a hot-rod. If you want a race car .. buy an evolution 10 ?? :)

They did, but in that case why bother with a peaky 24 valve engine? A lazy, low-revving torquey engine would suit both that characteristic, as well as the wide ratio gearbox. You can have a car that's fun to drive as well as a good cruiser, and getting the ratios right is a good start.
Oh and I've done the whole "jap crap" ;) thing... had a WRX STi a few years back and while it's great fun, it's a bit of a one trick pony. I have an R1 for when I need to go quickly now, cos Evos and Scoobies are just too slow :P
