Does any one know what the 'Auto' setting for the vent blowers is actually selecting automatically or is it really a preset of several vent open and doesn't ever change .

The sunlight sensor on the centre of the dash by the screen will alter the airflow to the dash vents :y

it turns on the compressor (if outside temp is above a certain amount) it also controls the fan speed automatically, based on what the sun sensor reports. I usually turn the fan speed down manually, but its always left on auto to keep the compressor running. Running Eco during winter is false economy, as come the summer, bang goes compressor!

I thought "AUTO" was only for the air distrubution according to temperature and sunlight sensor etc ... I thought that pressing "ECO" so "ECO" is NOT in the display turns the compressor on depending on outside temp .
I always thought having ECO on the display means the compressor is OFF and therefor its more economical as using a/c uses more petrol :-/

The theory says it's more economical than when in AUTO ie with the a/c ON, but in practice makes not much difference. ;)

Its minimal, if you don't use it the the compressor can easily dry up, and going to cost way more than the amount you save in fuel :y

The compressor WILL NOT run if outside air is +5 degrees or lower roughly ... according to the owners manual anyway .
But even if its +30 degrees outside selecting 20 degrees inside and pressing AUTO will not cause the compressor to run unless ECO is NOT on the display :y
If ECO is showing you will not get cooling because the compressor is turned off :y

I assume this is different for countries with a colder climate???? If not, a severe design defect. I can only imagine that anyone who lives in, say, Canada with a Catera must need a new Air Con COmpressor every couple of years! :-/

I do, but without real reason. Sometimes, when the fuel light is flashing and you dont have a penny in your pocket, it's a desperate attempt of getting an extra mile from the fumes in the tank ;D ;D ;D

Precisely my point. If it WONT run below 8celcius, then the Winters in some countries, it will never fire, causing damage.
