Title: Old Tyre Removal
Post by: amba on 19 July 2010, 09:12:29
I have had 4 worn out tyres fitted to std 16in elite rims sitting in the corner of our garden now for a long time and am getting serious grief from SWDBO and agree they need to go.I want to keep the rims but what is the easiest way of removing the old tyres, without going to local garage and paying them to put on machine...seem to remember years ago you could cut them ,but is there a quick way I can get them off

You might get through them with an angle grinder but there's quite a bit of steel in them. Will be a smelly, messy job. I'd be inclined to drop the local tyre place a tenner.

Thanks Kevin...just wanted to see if quick, free option first before loading them all into clit and taking trip to garage.

Take valve out to deflate - drive car carefully over tyre (not wheel) to break seal - then use a couple of tyre levers to remove tyres from wheel. :y

Give wheels to SWDBO, say there you go, get rid of them, but need the metal bits back.

Actually dont do that your probably never see SWDBO the wheels again.

may work out cheaper if you get the garage to remove the tyres & you dispose of them at a local council tip, did for me

to remove tyres first cut through the side wall with a stanley knife and drag the blade all the way around then turn tyre over and repeat.
all you will be left with is the tread which has wire through it the side wall hasn't
then you can cut the bead from the back using a grinder and you will need lots of discs :y

This works well although with a light car to drive over it you may need to leave it on top for a while or move the wheel round a couple of times while adding fairly liquid to break the bead
