Title: Lotus Omega modification
Post by: Lesopc on 20 July 2010, 14:05:38
Thinking of this as a future project. Would be nice as none were ever created. I am thinking of Ronal R44 17" rims. Yay or nay???

Hi Tunnie, when i say none created, i mean officially by manufacturer mate. But even still thinking of going the extra mile and making the exterior look as beefy as possible too but without getting too cheesy. I see no point in having a crapheap of of car (externally) with mean running gear underneath.

You still did not provide your valuable opinion Tunnie.

I like the idea of a Lotus Omega, but it need to be done well, so people think it looks geniune! Not too in your face.  :)

Only in silver according to their site http://www.automotivewheels.co.uk/images/ronalr39.jpg

Wouldn`t say they resemble Carlton wheels though :-/

Hi buddy, the R39's were for the other project idea. Some may still be found in black. This question was for the R44's though.

Would love to make one myself. Maybe my next project. In the parallel universe where they really did do a Lotus Omega B, they thought s*d breathing on the standard motor and making a highly strung blown monster, they just went straight for a big V8 from the family. So that's what I'll be fitting too :).

Naah to those rims, imho. They need to be deeply dished like the original Lotus Carlton Wheels, and probably 18s in keeping with the trend of bigger and bigger wheels on performance cars, though not to today's monster proportions as the Lotus Omega B would have been relaeased in '98 or so, right?

Want to stick to Ronals as per the originals if possible.

The wheels are one thing, but what Lotus engine would you put into the Omega?

Are there any up-to-date Lotus engines that would make the project worthwhile, or would a latest V8 GM unit be a better choice and forget the 'Lotus' badge? :-/ :-/

Well the V8 is on the cards as one of my 2 ideas but i think a Lotus would be a great idea. As for the engine it may just have to be a STANDARD GM straight 6 but tuned as much as possible i guess as Lotus tuned G36GET's are about as rare as rocking horse s**t. I mean if you had one, would you get shot, i wouldn't.

What, and spoil the Omega's reputation for mechanical reliability? ;)

Not if the engine were a tuned GM unit with Lotus mods or similar?

you'll be lucky to find a good LC engine. Problems: Blocks crack around the head bolt holes, head gaskest have to be made from std 24v ones, head bolts NLS, ARP kit ava at £250.00+, Timing chains weak and tensioners are NLS.
Turbos seals fail, not ava so have to be rebuilt, cooling system can be a problem, charge cooler pumps break up, have to use a pump from an outborad motor. thats just from the top of my head

Apart from that they are a great car and i don't thing anything from vauxhall will touch it and a good one will still see off an LS1, but leave the motor where its meant to be.

Your best bet would be to find an LS 'vetee and use the motor and box from that.

Good luck with it what ever you decide to do

Lots of probs with straight 6 GM lumps then. Suppose i could try and see what Lotus engines are around maybe V8 with a 6 speed box?
