if anyone can help i'll be eternally grateful and all that type of stuff! most often than not my internet explorer won't open, when it does it'll work long enough to go to google, go to oof, open the login boxes page then just stop, it says connecting in the tool bar but never does, and the green timer thingy at the bottom does'nt appear, but when it is working its all fine. i use a dsl modem through the usb port and after reinstalling it and configuring it tiscali tech support say its fine. seems to be better after uninstalling msn live messenger aswell but i want msn! could be a fault in the computer but its brand new, and nothings obviously gone wrong yet!!!! its got norton so unlikely to be a virus, please someone help or its back to curry's and i'll be without it for god knows how long, its a parcard bell easy note mx with vista home premium :(

Hi
using an original Ethernet port will be better than using USB ports..
MSN have too many registry entries inside the heart..
So taking them out is costly..You can repair..There are how to's on the
net.And for Norton ..never try to uninstall ..really risky...
-
thanks, i'll bear the norton bit in mind, its only a 3 month free trial, it did'nt come with msn live i installed it from the microsoft website, thats why i took it off, just in case, is it ok to use with vista?

I find Norton to be a right pain. Great when it works, but troublesome when it doesn't.
In your case, there are 1001 reaons why IE would fail, many based around downloaded plugins. Go to internet options and look for the setting to manage plugins to try to pinpoint it.
Its unlikely to be a hardware problem, so a factory restore may be another option (but back up your data!)

Yeah definitely software related I reckon.
What you should try first of all is to download and install firefox (www.mozilla.com/firefox) Use this instead for a bit and see if you get the same connection problems. If you don't then it's obviously Internet Exporer thats at fault not your router or computer.
You then can then try re-install IE or just keep using Firefox.

I don't understand why uninstalling Norton is risky...ive had various versions of Norton and uninstalled quite happily, always found Norton to be a drain on my laptops (admittedly not great spec).

thanks everyone! i've already started using firefox instead, seems to be ok for now, i'm looking into the add on situation now, ofcourse currys say its the last one of this model in stock so it'll have to be sent away to their tech team, i'll try and sort it myself first! ( oh no, it'll never work again!!!! ) ;)

I think the comment was 'do not leave your machine unprotected'.
Saying that, I've had a number of PCs that have required a rebuild after uninstalling Norton Internet Security, so I'm always scared doing it...

Norton is such a pain to reove, Symantec have a removal tool on their web site for download - use this if normal removal methods fail (as they usually do!)

Dont understand why , Norton is a very old firm and have enough money to get the best programmers..Or is it a company politics..

Simply because it "hooks" deeply into registry etc. When its working ok its good but slows pc on boot up and when running.

2 comapnies seem to have the ability to buy up other half decent products and ruin them - Symantec and Veritas. Now they are one and the same company, God help us!

My thoughts exactly. It's not exactly hard to keep a track of what you've mullered in the registry so the uninstaller can reverse it - if you can be bothered.
