Title: Oil pressure
Post by: Tim7 on 23 July 2010, 16:28:26
Oil light has started to flicker  :-[, comes on when ticking over goes out at about 1100 rpm. x20xev engine, oil level is spot on and oil is clean, no smoke from exhaust (that I can see), everything else is ok.
Any ideas as to cause, would like it to be in need of new filter and oil change.

Worth changing oil and filter if age, spec and quality of the current oil is not known.

Consider getting a pressure gauge on it and check the actual oil pressure. It's not impossible that the switch has got over-sensitive.

Sticking open of the oil pressure relief valve is a possibility, especially as the light coincides with low engine speed (= low oil delivery from pump).

If that's to no avail, might be worth checking the pickup strainer in the sump to ensure it's not blocked.

Failing that, it could be due to wear of the oil pump or the engine bearings. How many miles has it done?

HI Keven, engins just run in, only done 209000 miles  ::), oil was last changed about a year ago thinking about it, will get a filter and drop the oil in the next couple of days, only doing about 8000 miles a year at mo but quite a few short trips, less then 10 miles stop then back again.
Thanks Tim.
