Title: Running Hot Again
Post by: star_whites on 25 July 2010, 19:05:41
Ok, I've changed my radiator for a known good one and replaced the fan switches, however she is still getting too hot. It's a 3.0 auto estate it was fine on tickover however when driving the temp went up towards 100 but notover.

I pulled up and checked if fans were on and it appears that aircon rads were working overtime, however the main fan had not gone on to second speed.

How is this fan controlled and does it have a differentswitch?

Hello mate, have had the same problem except mine has been going over 100. as far as i know the first fan speed comes on at 97.5 and the second fan speed comes on at 102.5
i have recently done a big cooling system flush with a holts 2 part flush, first part strong chemical and second part to neutralise the chemical. anyway, this has improved my running temp alot. I dont know if this will help you. if not other things you could check. water pump, heater bypass valve, thermostat, :y

System has already been flushed and the thermostat/radiator/temp switch/fan switch have all been changed. I think it's the main fan but think I need it testing!

Have you confirmed the gauge is correct?

No I haven't, but it used to be spot on. It just started getting hotter when the weather changed and it got hotter!

If anyone near you has a code reader capable of reading the info, post up the Code Index of the panel.

Unfortunatly there is no one nearby with a reader that Im aware of. However I will do a paperclip test and see if there are any codes stored and post that!

They're both normal. You get 12 at the start and ending of the sequence and 31 is normal if the engine isn't running.

Another thing I haven't ruled out is that the fan is shot. When listening to it running it sounds unbalanced and not at a constant speed. I'm wondering if bearings have gone. :-?
