Title: Diff Whine
Post by: neillcd on 31 July 2010, 10:43:21
Have just bought 02 reg 2.2CD Manual Omega with 64K on the clock and what seems like full service history, very pleased with it bar usual steering vagueness which I shall attemtpt shorty. However the car does seem to have a noisy diff particularly on the overrun, is this a common thing, I know you sued to hear Carltons whining along the road a few years ago, I understand they are sealed for life so presumably not serviceable so what are my options?

Cheers in advance :(

Not common, do check there is some oil in it!

Are you sure it's diff whine?

I too thought that the whining noise from mine was diff related, but since adjusting tyre pressure I noticed a drop off in the noise, and also the noise varies from road surface to road surface, and I have infact found one road near me that I get no noise at all, leading me to believe it is tyre noise and not the diff.

Also the car is fitted with some really cheap nasty rubber. I am sure when these totally wear out and I pay for some half decent brand things will be a lot quieter and I can turn the radio down ::)

Mine started whining at the rear a short time ago, so its not the tyres. It started only when backing off, but is now worse, a fair bit of clonking when slowing down, and strange noises when driving. I saw signs of oil leaking from the front seal, so topped up the diff. It took a litre.........

Guess I'm looking for a replacement diff  :'( :'( :'(
