Title: Rust Spots

Hi,

I have taken off the mudflaps on my Omega.
Under the passenger side there are around 3 rust spots.

I already have a touch up paint stick, however what is the best way to get rid of the rust and apply the touch up paint? Is there a step by step guide anywhere - as i am assuming this must be a common problem with any car?

Some people say that i can simply use an 'organic rust remover' that requires no sanding down of the rusted area etc.

What are your guys thoughts?

There is only one cure for rust and that is to totally remove it, usually with a grinder, if you leave any rust behind it will just come back.

There is nothing you can apply, or paint on that will cure rust.

yep.. as stated rust must be completely removed..
until clean bare metal surface is shining again..


then surface must be dried.. and painted..  or soon it will be back..

a temp. solution is to use t-cut, this would remove surface rust then rub down and treat with a suitable rust remedy prior to paint

Yes i'm sure there are several products on the market with fancy names and flashy packaging, but as already advised mate the only thing required here is a good bit of elbow grease.
Every tiny last little speck of it needs to go otherwise your just wasting your own time.

If you have'nt got a grinder then go and buy yourself one.
Its worth it :y

The only trouble with grinding rust away is that you have to replace it with something, preferably new metal. if you dont feel it is worth the trouble, or dont have the skills to do this, you can keep the rust at bay using products like waxoil or dinitrol rust proofing fluid. These rust prevention fluids (especially waxoil) will penterate and skin over to form an effective barrier against further corrosion and if you have a dark coloured car will hardly be noticeable.

T-cut ain't a rust remover mate  :-?  It is a lightly abrasive liquid used to restore car paintwork back to its original condition, removing traffic film, etc

Grind rust out back to good metal and then prime prior to spraying.
