Hi all :)
The drivetrain on my miggy is feeling more and more "loose", there's a slack somewhere. Very annoying in heavy traffic and low gears. It has been like that as long as I've had it, but I really want to fix it now (before it gets a lot worse).
The gear stick moves a fair bit when you put on any load, but I think that's quite normal.
Anyone know exactly what part that usually fails? This is a manual, estate with LSD.

Do you mean the prop shaft or the gear linkage :y

Oh, I am talking about the prop shaft :)
Too early for me to think ::)

First job is to find where the slack is. Perhaps get under it with one rear wheel suspended, in gear with handbrake off and rock the wheel. See what moves.
Could be driveshaft LOBRO joints, diff backlash, propshaft UJ or doughnut, propshaft centre support bearing, gearbox and engine mounts.

Okay, what I was afraid of hearing anyway. Not that it's a big job finding out, just wondered if anyone was aware of a common fault/worn part. It makes the car "feel old".. A '95 isn't old ;)
I know the engine mounts are good, but I suspect the propshaft centre support is failing. Seen some of them getting bent/ripped apart on Omega A's (Carltons).

I think I've found the problem :o
After randomly reading up on reconditioning of flywheels, I see that a lot of people are complaining about dual mass flywheels (various brands). The flywheel lose the tension in the springs (or break) so you can end up having a few degrees of slack here.
I went outside, put the car in 1st gear and had a mate push and pull the car while I was lying under it. The noise comes from the rear of the engine/bellhousing. Putting it in a higher gear didn't change the noise, but the car could move a fair bit more before it hit the "clunk".
I can't conclude before I take off my gearbox and try to shake the flywheel, but everything I can think of proves this, it seems logic. After all, the flywheel has been used/abused since 1995, have at least 137k miles worth of road and as I know been mounted on 4 different engines..
So, IF my DMF is fubar, how on earth do I get a new one? This is not an item you usually would transport across borders due to weight :'(
