The problems with it or the fact it's a 2.0?
-
The engine is a 2.5 v6

If you say its slipping in 4th sounds more like the gearbox than the engine mate. Is it an auto or manual?
If its a manual i suppose the clutch could be slipping.
If an auto maybe the oil needs topping up or changing.
Don't give up on it yet the problem is you dont know what has been done to the car or hasnt before you owned it. Once its sorted it will be fine.

Yes it is auto cheers Bob

What is wrong with the tick over? Does it stall or is it too low or high?
Any fault lights showing?
l.o.l. at 'year' 2000, and overdrive on a manual!! :y

Someone has fitted a Lotus Carlton engine into an Omega... can't remember if it was on this site or Autobahnstormers though...

The tickover is at 700rpm but engine dies suddenly but it does not do it all the time and there are no fault codes

For the idle problem you should try cleaning the ICV with some carb cleaner. Tends to settle the idle pretty well and stop fluctuations and only a 10 minute job :y
Do all the dash lights light up and go out as they should with ignition?

Where are you Bob? Maybe someone local could lend a hand :y

Hi i am in horley surrey rh6 8hh if any one can help would be brilliant

A bit too far for me to pop over unfortunately. Kevin Wood has a genuine Tech2 and is only down in Alton, Hants and I know several London and surrounding members have laptop based code readers so I'm sure someone will pipe up soon ;)
