Title: Oil cooler line fitting size?
Post by: WGoins88 on 11 August 2010, 02:41:05
Ok, since I decided to bypass my oil cooler, I need to know what size the fittings are that come out of the engine by the oil filter so I can find the correct hose barbs I need. I am assuming they are Metric, but it seems they may be SAE.

Any help on this would be great!

Hi m8,
Whatever your problem is with the oil cooler it is not a good idea to bypass it even temporarily unless you are substituting it with a more efficient one.
Been there, done that then undid it! because it  caused some oil leaks due to the oil temperature making it so thin it bypassed some seals!
Up to you but think carefully before you commit to doing something you might regret.

Yep, fix the oil cooler. GM wouldn't have gone to the cost of including it if it were not required. ;)

I should have mentioned that I am bypassing the internal cooler and installing a external thermostatically controlled one. It's going to be installed with stainless steel braided lines with AN fittings.

Ok, so the AN fittings and stainless steel braided lines are not going to happen.... I can't find ANYTHING metric.

And after thorough research, I've determined that the ports on the block for the cooler pipes are M18 x 1.50mm.... is this correct? If so, has anyone ever located a hose barb that would fit on these?

Hopefully someone can help me so I can get this old girl back on the road!

would it not  be easier to replace/repair what you had in the first place ie an oil to water cooler in the middle of the V?  :-/

If you are still going down the route of an external cooler I would suggest giving Think Automotive a call.

Very helpful guys with oil coolers, hoses, unions and the like. They may well be familiar with the engine if you tell them it's the same as a Vauxhall X30XE and I'm sure shipping to you for a couple of hose connectors will not be too costly.

Hmm, I will certainly take a look at them regarding a cooler, however I got lucky last night and found the 18 x 1.5 to -8 AN fittings I was looking for. They weren't cheap ($20 USD a piece), but it's far cheaper than the factory oil cooler replacement. I already have the braided hoses with the 90* bends I wanted, so the cooler will be ready to install soon.

This whole thing is only going to cost me $140 total to do as compared to nearly $400 for the stock cooler.

I got the local agricultural supplies place to make hoses for me - you know the man-in-a-van hose repair specialist.

what I did find to be the difficult part was the hose routing to the cooler ( front-mounted ? )

not too much of a trauma, as I never keep air-con fitted, so I can place the hoses where the compressor used to live.

Yeah, what I am hoping is that I can get the hoses to go where I want them to go. All I have to do is cut the hoses to fit and install the fittings. As soon as it's all installed and back together, I'll grab some pictures.
