Title: SPD/IF
Post by: TheBoy on 07 January 2008, 13:29:33
My PC MCE has digital out, both optical and coax.  The VGA card has HDMI, and a SPD/IF in. My surround amp has both coax and optical SPD/IF inputs.

What I need to do is connect SPD/IF to the VGA SPD/IF in (to send audio up HDMI cable, along with video) and simultaneously send SPD/IF to the surround amp.

Can I simply use optical to amp, and solder the wires from vga card to coax connector on motherboard?

Not sure if I'm pleased or saddened by lack of (proper) responses:

Pleased, as it appears I'm not as stupid as I thought,

Saddened, the fact that it appears I know as much as anyone here about it makes me chief geek :(

Just do not use TV sound?

Looks like HDMI audio is not the same as SPD/IF

Search on HDMI audio

Some progs, can't be arsed to get up to turn on sub for surround system (being another ill concieved piece of sony junk, it doesn't come on with amp remote), so need to have sound going to TV.

The vga takes spd/if, and sends it up the hdmi...

Unless there is a selection of optical / coaxial output I would assume they're both active together so you should be able to do as you say. Why the solder? Is there not a cable to connect the two?

vga needs a connection from inside case - only connector will disconnect optical as well, hence solder on the socket...

Gotcha. It's a combined optical/digital output with the optical output in the centre hole of the phono?

I'd try it :y

Its got seperate optical and phono digital outs on a seperate daughterboard, connected to a single spdif on motherboard.  I was thinking of taking it off the back of the phono digital out...

I haven't done anything that mad since I fitted a NICAM decoder to a VCR.

Sounds doable - what have you got to lose? You can always unsolder.

Since it is split off there will somewhere you can easily intercept the data

What are you trying to do? I would take a guess at sending digital audio to Amp and TV in parallel? But I don't think I'm right.

Sorry, but it's not clear from original post...

I'm not normally worried when I don't know the answer to most of the questions that are asked on here. What does bother me is when I have absolutely no idea what the question means in the first place, let alone the answer.  :-[

Exactly as you say, parallel to TV and amp

Anything else (e.g taking a simple phono out from the amp) will probably wreck synchronisation of the sound signals. You are still at the mercy of the A/D circuits in the amp and TV. ...good luck!

Tap off the coax as said.....there such high impedance that it wont make any odds. Keep the cable short though because it will no longer be matched.

And whilst we are talking of TLAs etc, working in the Telecoms equipment industry we have loads.....and Ericsson use abreviations for all the servers to.....we have one called PRIM, one called GASK etc and today I was looking to see if there was a system that did customer facing change control.......

......well, I found it .......and its called PISS! ;D

Seen the opticals before, but of no use to me (VGA card no optical in)

Thanks.

The cable is one of those silly twisted cables (similar to PC power switch cable or LED cable). Will need to be about 8" long.

I may get scared and pop it over, along with a new sump plug, as my soldering has got shocking lately :(
