Just tried to top up my rear axle oil but found a torx T50 had some play in it on the filler plug,i did not chance using it in case i damaged the head,my set of torxs only go's to T50 so has anyone else had to use a T60 to undo the filler plug ? also found the self leveling shocks leaking oil!

Level plug is a hex (allen) head, not torx. Correct size one is a tight fit, if there is any 'slop' you are one size down and probably need to clean out some rust to get the right one to fit.

Just out of curiosity why would you want to "top up" the rear diff with oil ?Do they leak enough to require this.
If the oil should be replaced do you drain it and refill ?
-
Diff is a sealed for life unit but i wanted to check to be on the safe side, according to the haynes manual you should top up with hypoid sae 90 and renew with gm special lubricant 19 42 382 (9 293 688) thats for non lsd diffs by the way. :y

Thanks for info mahony..just again for curiosity did it need any oil adding as might venture under mine and check out.

Still haven't got the plug off yet, just ordered a set of torx keys off of ebay which includes a t55 and a t60,when i check i will report back, also got to get some new self leveling shocks,im glad ive got that trade card now! anyone know the current price from the stealers ?
update the price on trade club is now £70 plus the vat

Just changed the rear self leveling shocks, not to bad a job after getting the tight bottom bolts off, diff finally topped up with hypoid 90 and took about just under a quarter of a litre to start comming out of the plug hole, and there is no leak from the diff so god knows where the oil has gone (maybe previousley diff seal had failed and replaced and not topped up ? ), i suppose a quarter of a litre is not to bad after nine years. :y

Anyone know what 'GM special lubricant 19 42 382 (9 293 688)' actually is? Is there an alternative to this or is it only obtainable from vauxhall dealers?....
