Not sure if I'm getting really bad consumption with my 3.0. I've noticed on tickover that it's doing 7 to gallon and driving around town it's averaging around 13 and that's with me driving like a learner, does this sound about right and if not what could be causing it :-?

In need of a service?, dirty/missing air filter? blocked breathers? :-/

On tickover it should hover between 0.3 and 0.4 mpg, and even down to 0.2 without the a/c on. That is what mine does anyway ;) ;)
Around town mine returns about 18 / 19 mpg ;) ;)
A good service, including all filters and plugs changed, with the breathers cleaned out should make a big difference :y :y

Breathers and plugs were recently done when I did cam cover gaskets so it surely can't be them.

Well something is 'holding' your car back :P :P
Are the brakes ok, and not binding? Is your exhaust all clear without obstructions that are building up back pressure? When was your cambelt last changed and by whom? :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/
What revs does your car idle at?
-
Cam belt was done by me last year when I rebuilt the engine and was set up with the cam tools. Brakes are in need of changing but not binding as far as I'm aware. Exhaust is blowing at manifold but other then that I think it's ok

That would do it. :y
A leaking exhaust manifold can let air in as well as exhaust out. The extra oxygen convinces the ECU that the engine is running lean so it chucks more fuel in and crucifies your fuel consumption and emissions.
Fix the manifold gasket and that should fix it :y

Yep Andy, that certainly would lower mpg! :y :y :y

It's actually a cracked manifold but haven't managed to get hold of a replacement yet

For interest, I took my 3.2 MV6 Auto down to Devon last week using A/B roads and Motorways, and it returned about 31MPG. Local driving normally returns about 25MPG. Tickover in "Drive" on the Instant readout shows 0.4 and Tickover in "Neutral" shows 0.3. Interestingly with the air conditioning turned on adds 0.1 to each of these respectfully.

Erm the instant consumption changes from miles per gallon when running to gallons per hour at idle,so it would have been 0.7 gallon per hour, meaning it will sit ticking over all day and use 0.7 gallons every hour :y
That not right?
