Title: heating up :(
Post by: Fazeel on 14 August 2010, 22:55:19
ok so it starts like this that few weeks back I had this coolant leaking problem,

so I got that fixed, but now even though there's no leak,
every time I stop the car, it starts to heat up,
not just normal rising of the temperature, but soo much that the red temp light lights up !!
and then when I start to move again, it cools down a little,

I know about the water circulation thing, that it stops circulating or something when the car is stationery, and when it moves the water circulates and the car cools down,

but its heating up to such an extent is worrying me !!! :-/

any ideas what the problem could be ??

Worthwhile checking the thermostat...

You mention you had a coolant leak, did you repair it by replacing failed components or using something along the lines of Radweld or egg whte (perhaps as an interim repair)..

It may be a build up of gunk in the system or perhaps just an airlock, but may be worthwhile flushing the system completely again, although personally, I would still look at the stat first...

Is the fan kicking in or not???

Can I do that at home, or do I have to take it to the garage to get the radiator cleaned ??

Possible, when I lost all my coolant a couple of years ago, that did, but, I filled it, ran the car for a while and filled it again..

The only way I know of checking the thermostat is to remove it, put it into a with some cold water in, and pour boiling water from the kettle into the cup, letting it over flow to physically see if it opens...

If the temperature is OK when the car is moving but rises when stationary that would indicate that the thermostat is OK but that the cooling fans are not switching between off/low/high speed when needed.

I'm guessing from your location that you have ambient temperatures of 30 to 40 degrees Celsius. In those conditions you need a good radiator. If yours is in poor condition or has been clogged up with rad-weld that could also be the cause.

Would have helped if I looked at his location earlier...    :-/

Doubt it will be the thermostat. I can remember Markdtm saying that they stick open rather than shut.

ok so what is it that I have to do ??
Check the thermostat, the radiator,  the fans or what ??

This is really, because every time it heats up at a traffic light, I get worried and I have to stop right after
 :(

when I had this I checked the thermostat, replaced the heat sensor, flashed the system.
noting helped, only dismantle the rad open it and did thorough cleaning of all the tunnel inside.
did in a garage quite cheep

Check the easy things first.
Fans first.
After starting the engine (but before it gets hot) press the 'eco' button to switch off the air con compressor. there should be no cooling fans running.
Press the 'eco' button again and the air con compressor should start turning and the two fans in front of the radiator should spin at low speed.

There are more involved checks for when the front fans switch to high speed and when the rear fan switches on but I can't find a 'how to' at the moment  :(
