Title: ATF and filter change.
Post by: geoffr70 on 15 August 2010, 21:48:32
Hello, routine servicing of the beast brings me to changing the ATF. It's 2000 f/l a 3.0 with 114k on clock. I've seen the guide in the maintenance section, could i use this to replace all the fluid as oppose to just a to up, and would I need to chnage the filter? thanks

You can only change about 50% of the fluid by dropping both sumps. The rest remains in the cooler & torque converter. I suppose you could do a couple of quick changes which would replace 75% of the fluid.

Not a difficult job .. but an extremely uncomfortable and messy one, unless you have access to a decent lift !!! Did the old 2.5 on axle stands....  .. NOT fun ... this one is really due the same treatment but I keep putting it off ....... :(

Filter can be cleaned with parafin/white spirit I believe .. I replaced it and bought the filter and gaskets through JPAT

Myself and Jim are going to have a ATF day soon!

1 x 3.2
1 x 3.0
1 x 2.2

That will be a messy day!

Shame you are so far away .. I'd let you do another 3.2 at the same time ..  :)

And buy the largest bottle of shampoo you can find .... preferably in a 1 gallon drum !!! You will shower and soap for hours .. but still stink for days. Clothes should be black-bagged and binned instantly. Concrete drive will require about 2 years of weathering/power washing to finally remove the stains... despite about 10 layers of newspaper.

Sod of a job IMHO ... which is why I keep putting it off !!!!

If memory serves its a phone call for prices. Don't have the invoice as it went with the old car paperwork, and was over 2 years ago anyway.

For some reason about £35 keeps dropping into my brain ... might well be well wrong though !!

Use a plastic potting up tray to drop the oil and sump(s) into. Mine cost £12 years ago made by Robinsons amazingly. Saves on mess. My filter and gaskets were about £38. Then there is the Dexron111 oil.

I built a 40 cm high level ramp for doing that job and changing gearboxes. If you want you can have the oil changing day here. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Had a thought and checked ... if you are an ABS member .. then in the SSN member services section ..Dave Kember advertises both gaskets and the filter for £35 + pp ..

Thanks everyone, I've got access to a pit but we've got to replace bearings on a fire engine and get it shifted before I can use that! Think I'll use the garage at work through the night and make a mess there instead!
