Now, I gave up signing these damn things a while ago. Got fed up with getting the usual rubbish in return thanking me for my interest but explaining that I am sadly misguided and that nanny state knows what's best for me... ::)
However, this one means a lot to me. I can't believe there's a shred of truth in it but I've signed up just in case. >:(

Banning the use of old cars is really meaningless if the car is looked and serviced properly..
But I remember one thread about EU will ban usage of cars older than 10 years

As I said, I can't believe it would ever happen. After all, it's not just classic car enthusiasts it would hit. Those in society who can't afford to change their car every few years will be disadvantaged. There would be uproar.
However, I'm starting to be of the opinion that anything's possible these days, so I hope it is nipped in the bud.

Conspiracy theory, anyone? Is it just me, or did the car manufacturers manage to sell us all Global Warming doom and gloom? We must get rid of our old 'polluting' cars, must we? And who will conveniently build us new 'environmentally friendly' cars? Why the car industry of course. Mine those ores, warm up the furnaces, we must build more new cars to save the planet! >:(

I seem to remember this being talked about 10 – 15 years ago. There was some evidence, at the time, that it created more ‘pollution’ to make a new car that to run a 10 year old car for some, cant remember how many, years. Older cars exist so only carbon emitted from running which is not that much more than newer, not necessarily the latest, cars use.
If we stopped producing new cars for 5 years how much would that inconvenience anyone? And how much crap into the atmosphere would it save.
Personally I think that manufactures now build such reliable cars that last for many years that this is just an excuse to sell more.
30 years ago a 5 year old car was becoming a rust and unreliable method of transport, now 5 years old can be almost like new.

I found a report from 1999 which discussed options such as scrapping of older cars and forcing upgrades to cats and other madness. At that time a significant percentage of emissions was produced by older cars but most of that was due to a relatively large number of pre-93 cars still on the road without cats. I bet that picture has changed now!
Although we have seen euro 2, 3, 4 emissions legislation go through on new cars they're really into diminishing returns now so you can't really say that a new car is significantly cleaner than, say, a 5 year old car. I bet a fair amount of motor industry investment has gone into the "research" that produces rubbish like this.
Anyway, the flavour of the month is CO2 emissions now, and that's far less about how old the car is because it's not affected by cats (other than that you have to burn more fuel and thus create more CO2 to make a cat work in the first place!).

Agreed. In THIS country. However, things like this are happening in europe where classics have a much weaker following and with the government's record of rolling over and caving in to anything from Brussels they need a firm message IMHO.
