Title: Facelift steering wheel
Post by: Iain on 17 August 2010, 21:55:27
Does anyone know if the black plastic disk with the chrome Griffin on it can be removed from the wheel without setting off the airbag?
meaning can i just 'peel' off the plastic part or is it different to what im thinking?

I guess you mean the Vauxhall griffin on the centre of the airbag unit?
And you want to remove it, to put something in it's place?
I wouldn't really want to attempt to be scraping bits of the airbag unit. I guess if you wanted to be a bit different, you could always replace the airbag unit with an Opel or Cadillac one if you didn't want the VX griffin there?

I was going to put a thin screwdriver down it and prize it off but was worried i'd set off the airbag!

It looks to me as if there is a black 'cap' with the badge on it,i want to pull it off, remove the Griffin and replace with a nice wee Opel blitz i have :y

The 'cap' looks as if it is just double sided taped on

There are three plastic rivets, see the pic of the underneath. You need to slice through them with a cheese wire.

Ignition Off = no chance of AirBag deployment, unless you are faffing around with the AirBag circuitry.

So i can leave the battery connected as long as the keys are in my pocket?

OK done it at last, sorry for the poor pic and the messing about trying to "updraft it" or whatever they call it. I would disconnect the battery first to be uber safe. You may find it easier to remove the airbag from the car.  What do you intend fitting?

If it were me, I wouldn't bother disconnecting the battery.  You aren't actually delving into the airbag unit, or disconnecting/reconnecting it.  Most would probably advise playing it safe though.  :y
