Title: Wishbone question
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 08 January 2008, 04:39:32
Posting in gen chat, as not Omega related.

I recently changed a pair of wishbones on a Vectra B. The job itself was a peice of cake, about 15 mins per side tops.

The only snag I came across, is that I know they are supposed to be torqued with the car down on the ground.

However, I just couldn't get the bloody access, to get on the bolts!

Is there ANY way of doing this, without a big ramp, or a pit?

Would it be acceptable to drive the cars front wheels up onto ramps to get the clearance, and then do the final torque?

I presume it would, just wanted to check...

Lower it on to some bricks? or a kerb? Jack the wheel up?

Can you not tighten with a spanner to stop movement and then jack it back up for the final nip up with the torque wrench.

Place jack under hub or similar to act as weight on wheels, then torque up as normal.

I lower it, tighten up pretty tight with normal rachet, then raise again to get big torque wrench in

I can't see any problem with that idea. The weight of the car is on the wheels.

Many years ago I used to use scaffolding planks and bricks to progressively lever the car to any height up to about 2 feet. Long winded, so probably only worthwhile for long jobs, but it worked a treat.
You also need a bit of space, front and back, as well, of course.

I used an axle stand under the hub, and "very slowly" lowered the jack.
