Title: Recommended Tyres
Post by: Mr Hagon on 08 January 2008, 08:42:06
My current set of tyres are pretty much at the point where I think they will just about get through the MOT, so I will need to change them soon.

I have done well, in that the current set have lasted over four years and over 20 000 miles.

They're Pirelli P6000 Powergy's and I managed to get the set of four fully fitted for £400 back in October 2003.

This time round I was wondering whether anyone has a tyre preference or recommendation for the Omega, given the fun that you can have with the camber, tracking and wheel alignment etc.

Thanks,

Mr Hagon.

I'm running on Continental Sport Contact 2's
Nice and grippy, in wet and dry, quiet, lasting quite well, no tramlining

I guess it all depends on a) How you drive the car and b) How long you want them to last.

Hard compound tyres such as Michelin and Continental will last longer and perform better in the dry whereas softer compound tyres such as Pirelli's perform better in the wet but wear quicker.

If you ask twenty different people you'll probably get twenty different answers.

I'm thinking of putting Dunlop Sport 9090's on mine as they seem a fairly good comprimise, however, i've heard people say that they do create a fair amount of tyre noise.

I have run SP9000 and 9090 since I've had the car. Being wide, low profile, there is road noise anyway, but Dunlops may raise this slightly.  Also, an element of tramlining, again, possibly due to wide, lp, directional tyres.

The TD is on Avon ZZ3 on rear (bloody hopeless) and some crap budget on front.

I found Dunlops increased road noise slightly over the Primacys that were on the car when I got it.

Falken (512 I think) on my CDX.  Were 63 quid a corner all in.
I've had Kumho in the past which did pretty well.

I too rate the Conti's but they were twice the price.

i have Dunlop SP9090s on mine currently

backs have done 17,000 and now need replacing, the fronts are only half worn....

they do create a bit of noise and i have found that they are not quite as grippy as the Khumo ecstas that i had on there before...however i was only getting 10,000 out of a set of Khumos

Goodyear F1's will stick to the road like toffee to a blanket, however they will wear quickly and they are dear, and i have found them to be a little noise as well....

Never tried the michelins or pirellis

the ectsa sports are a soft compound tyre, Khumo do make harder ones, it could have been you had another compound.
plus my driving style has been described as 'enthusiastic' especially on twisty A roads  :y

I do like Nankangs NS2's  :y

Seem a good fairly hard wearing budget tyre  :y

Altho i dont order from the internet anymore......used to use mytyres.co.uk

I've found a local company (well not too sure how local really......they have have quite a few branches local to me........so maybe more widespread than i think)

Bathwick Tyres.......can order (never have them in stock) Nankang NS2's and fit em for £55 per corner  :y

Need to visit them this week for 2 new ones on the front.......its either that or get the penknife out to cut a few new treads on the edges  ;D
(scuffing  :( )
Think i'll get em to do the tracking this time round........ok not ideal.....but if they make a difference it will be worth it  :y

Well.....i would spend the dosh...if thought it was gonna be worth it.......i think Bathwick charge about £25 for tracking.....ok i know i wont be ideal......but my tyres are lasting less each time....so summat is getting worse.....if they make an improvement...i'll be happy  :y
Reason i dont want to spend a load of dosh.....a few days later i could be going over mountainous speed bumps or driving around new estates that have raised ironworks........so basically all the good work that WIM could have done on my Omega......could easily be undone in days  :(

Read WIM's post in Tech info for reasons why yours may be getting worse

It's camber that's the problem, though, so it will need a full geometry setup. The limits on the machines are really wide and the best setting for your car will be somewhere between those limits. Mine was within limits but ate a set of fronts in 12K. If the guy setting it up doesn't have the experience with Omegas he will likely see that they're all in the green and adjust nothing, or he'll adjust them to "somewhere in the green" which could make matters better or worse :(

Found it  :y But it wasnt in Tech info  ;D

Wishbones and weak front springs........hmmmmmm not sure i suffer from those........it only passed an MOT end Nov.....nothing picked up on......
Tho i must say........i used to be able to get over 30k off the front tyres.......im down to about 20k now........so i havent got 'silly' wear going on, just not as good as i used too  :y

TD ..

Imperial Tyres on the Elgin Estate do a full "Optiline" setup for £50 +VAT ... probably not as good as WIM but they sorted my problems out .. and the car had been to Bathwick 5 times - and it still pulled left.

You get a full printout as well that you ccould fax to WIM if you wanted further advice.

You mean he doesn't get stuck in his own furrows due to lack of nobbly tyres?

I did so far a total of 90k miles on 2 Omegas and several sets of tyres... with one exception, all were Michelin. I have no complains about the Michelins, they do the job and are long-lasting.

The odd one out was my previous set which were Contis, I thought the Contis were slightly better all around, i.e. the car felt more sure-footed, and the noise level was low, but not significantly enough to stop me from buying Michelins again...

So from my experience Michelins are OK, Contis are slightly better, if this helps.
