Is it ok to jack the back end up on the diff?
-
Someone here once said it's not ok because the diff is basically hanging "free" inder the car (rubber bushings)
However, I have done that once or twice and made no visible damage :-/
-
No as you risk (at the least) damaging the rubber mounts that bolt to the diff.
-
And one thing I forgot: the diff is not a steel casting (aluminium or some other light alloy?) and therefore there is a big risk that you may crack the mounts.
-
no, not advisable
-
Right thanks guys, I wont be doing that then. I saw my neibour lifting his mx5 up by the diff but thats a far lighter car. Thanks again :y

Doesn't mean he was right to do it, either ;)
A fair few 300ZX owners do the same thing after misreading the service manual; the lift point there is actually just behind the diff, not on the diff itself (there's a reinforced jacking point on the subframe).
Maybe there's something similar on the Omega? Most cars do have a central front & rear jacking point..
[edit] Except the Omega, it seems (having just looked in TIS)

I'd be interested to find out.

Like I say, I looked in the TIS and it only lists four jacking/lifting points (for a lift) on the chassis rails (at least that's what it looks like they're on) - no central jacking points front or rear..

In front I have jacked from the subframe just behind the sump. TO lift from it, I can not see any possibilities to damage whatsoever. From rear I have jacked also from the tow bar ( I have the Kovil tow bar, Finnish company). I know, someone will tell me not to bu tthe stress in jacking is less than the stress during a tow of 2500 kg trailer at the spped of 80 km/h...
