As many of you know, I have been changing the V6 for a TD for the past couple of weeks. After much rewiring I try to start it and when I put the key in the ignition and turn to allow glow plugs etc, the engine management light starts flashing. I suspect that engine imobilisor doesn't like my key now. I have changed the ECU and the ring around the ignition lock, but as the TD key I had didn't have a chip (i dont think) I thought my key would be fine, or is it having a hissy fit because my (V6) key does have a chip.
I get fuel and the glow plugs do their thing but it won't start
-
Any error codes ?
-
flashing eml with non starting does indicate an immobiliser issue.

.... I have been changing the V6 for a TD for ......
surely much easier all round (insurance-modified cars) to have sold the V6 & bought a diseal :-/ :-/ :-/

That's no way to get your hands dirty. ;D

Ok, stupid question, do I have to change to control unit in the drivers?? passenger footwell too??
-
so you are using the chip from the v6 on the td ecu and reciever
-
As far as I can tell, I have 4 components to the immobiliser, ECU, control unit in the footwell, thing that fits on the steering column, and the key.
The V6 has a chipped key, the TD as far as I can tell doesn't (1996 MY).
I have swapped the ECU (obviously), and the bit under the steering column for the units from the TD. I have not yet changed the control unit (V6 unit still fitted) and I am using the V6 key (without chip).
So this leaves changing the ignition lock (to use TD key (unchipped)) and the control unit in the footwell.
I asume this is the next path, or am I wasting my time ??
It turns over on the starter, and I get fuel btw

You will need the small little immobilizer chip that lives in the key too, this is read by the 'thing that fits on the steering column'.
You can try using the v6 chip and swapping back the steering column thing but I am pretty sure you will need the T.D. chip/transponder units to match the diesel e.c.u.

This is possibly where it gets complicated, as I think the TD key is an unchipped one ?? without the chip is in one of the lock blips (I wish I understood this more.... :D)

The ECU, immobilser ecu (around the ignition barrel) and chip in the key are all coded together so you need all three of these items from the original tractor
-
Vauxhalls have used this set up for years, I'm sure any Omega should have the chip in the key.
Click on the link for a picture of the chip and it's location within the key...

So the key has a chip in it then, even though it has no blip buttons on it... (hmmm... can't find a confused smiley)

My V6 key looks like that, the tractor key I have doesn't (sadly at work and no way of posting a picture)

Simple to answer that.....does the original car have the immobiliser ecu around the ignition (the diesel).
And yes, earlier units had a key nad a seperate rf remote (and even earlier ones an IR one!)

Yep, has the immobiliser ecu, and a control unit, so I guess then that the chip that talks to it is in one of the remote blips, it was a 1996MY, I just wonder if the wiring to the immobiliser ECU has changed between 1996 and 1999.
Sadly I'm at work and can't do any testing

Its not changed....the chip will be in the key, is it a key like this?

It is indeed, I guess now it's time to do some further work, will the chip in that key fit in the newer style key? therefore retaining the central door locking on the key
Thanks for all help so far btw :)

Yep, open the key (as per above) remove the chip and pop it in your newer key.
Dont change the central locking ecu.

Dont change the central locking ecu.
Sorry to butt in but this central locking/immobilizer e.c.u... This is the box that fits around the ignition barrel, right?
So what is the box located down in the passenger footwell area? Is that just for the central locking or is that not the e.c.u. that goes with the chip in the key and the ignition barrel box?
Sorry for the questions, I just want to make sure I know which bits to salvage from my old car...

Immobiliser ecu is around inition lock
controller in the kickpanel is for central locking/alarm
Totaly seperate systems

Thanks to everyone for the help.....
It now runs :y
The only problem I had then was actually stopping it running.... Perhaps still some wiring to look at, but thats a huge step to getting this project finished :D
-
Good work fella, sure there will be some bits to sort, but at least with it running you can find em!
