Title: camshaft/crankshaft sensor/dis pack
Post by: geoffr70 on 16 September 2010, 00:13:57
Hello, after reading some of the thread on here, and seeing that some people keep a spare crankshaft sensor in their boot, i have the following questions please:

1. What symptoms would i get from a failing

cam shaft sensor

crank shaft sensor

dis pack

on a 3.0 v6 auto?

Would it blatantly be one fault or do they have common symptoms? Just so i could know what's what and replace at roadside so i don't get stuck. Which would be best to keep as a spare in the boot, what's the best price and place to get them? And can you go pattern with these parts for cheapness?

I know it's alot, but thanks!

Not answering your questions directly, but replacing the DIS-Pack on the road side would be a nightmare.  Also, the cost of such a thing to sling in the boot when you might not need it would be highly negative in the economy stakes.

Yeah I know but i've done worse things than that at the most inconvenient and awkward times!

I don't think changing dis pack would be that bad now compared to some of jobs i've done on it, besides for the length of time I'm going to keep the car i expect to change it so won't necessarily be a waste of wonga.

AFAIK they could all give fairly similar symptoms.

Lumpy running, difficult starting or won't start, misfiring.
Error codes may well give you a clue as to which is the culprit.

On the v engines it's almost alwys crank sensor that plays up, do not buy pattern, dealer only. Cranking but not firing usually the first sign of trouble ime.

Ignition system, worry about it when it happens, in the mean time keep the breathers clear and check for oil in plug wells now and then.
