Title: V6 Bottom Pulley Woes
Post by: Broomies Mate on 14 September 2010, 21:44:22
The Bottom Pulley on my V6 is knackered.

The rubber between the 'ribbed' wheel and the centre part of the pulley has gone hard, cracked and now allowing the pulley to separate.  So, another Auxiliary belt needed! (Number 3).

Now, can I re-use the existing Pulley, leaving the rubber in there and weld the two pieces of metal together?????

I am friends with the owner of an Engineering company, so it could be welded and balanced without an issue.  Is it feasible as a fix?

If not, whats the part number and cost of a new Pulley?

Thankies!  :y

The rubber makes the pulley form what is known as a 'harmonic damper' - the idea is that the rubber absorbs some of the 'pulses' of the engine and helps prevent vibration down the crank that can accelerate bearing wear.

Opinion is divided on how much damage removing them does, and I suspect it varies very much engine design to engine design - for example I ran a solid (aluminium) pulley on one of my cars with no ill effects seen when I tore the engine apart.

Other people will tell you that your bottom end shells will last about five minutes and you'll be looking at an expensive bill..

Your call, really, I think.

Thanks Aaron.  Your input and experience is gratefully received.

Anyone with EPC know of a P/N and cost of a new part?  :y

A rare failure so second hand will be fine.

Interestingly, the 3.2 (and possibly the 2.6) used a press steel design which is a bit lighter (still has the rubber cush drive bit in it though)

No worries - the reason I say it's largely up to you is it really comes down to .. how long do you expect an engine to last?

On the cars I've fitted them to, I've been less concerned with long-term reliability and more with performance.. when I've been concerned about reliability I've stuck with the harmonic damper :)

Can someone, anyone, offer the part number for the bottom pulley along with a price please?  ;)

Also more opinions on welding and balancing the current pulley, even for a short-term fix...... I've seen loads of aftermarket Ally units which dont have the rubber bush, so cant see it being a major issue, but will leave it to the more knowledgeable people to educate me.  :y

Exactly what I fitted to the VG30DETT in the Nissan - no shell damage after ~6000 miles, and dropped a lot of rotational mass from the crank (stock crank pulley on the Nissan weighed some 10lb!)..

If you have, that would be absolutely brilliant.  I'm in Trowbridge on the 28th.  We can arrange a "The part is under the wheelie bin, drop the cash through the letterbox" type of agreement  ;D

I'm getting it welded tomorrow as a temporary fix as I cant find a Vx dealer local to me with one in stock.

If you want good second hand then I too have one knocking around, just pay me whatever you think it will cost to post, plus a little extra to cover Pay-pal, packaging, time and effort... Would you like me to check part number and sort out a picture?

Use a proper one, ya skinflint!!

I'll even help you fit it..........................

(seriously though, welding is only a really temporary fix, get a genuine one on there asap, mate.)

Did you sort out any spare tyre/wheels Ross?

Mike.,

Ask your self a simple question.

If it was fine to fit a single piece solid casting then why would the manufacturer go to the added expense and material cost of producing a more complex 2 piece unit with a rubber coupler.

And remember, its not neccassarily the crank it might affect.....there are quite a lot of ancillaries running off that kevlar belt
