I have heard that newer antifreeze can cause false positives. Head gasket failures of the traditional kind are rare on the V6. What are the symptoms?

losing coolant,,, no leaks ,,, high temp,,, temp gauge moving up when at a standstill(100) and when accelarate straight back down to 92 ish...just not running right

forgot to add its a P reg

Very unreliable test,ESP if the car has had oil cooler failure or the oil cooler cover plate re sealed in the past,  we see this sort of post all the time. So often the coolant loss is in the v and evaporates off before hitting the floor. So when you say no leaks, please explain. Has the plenum and inlet been removed and a leak test done?

Most of the symptoms described can be caused in other ways, although head gasket is a possibility, but history on here would suggest otherwise, most likely.

Is there any sign of water in the oil? Mayo deposits, grey brown appearance?

Are the fans working?

Does the engine run right?

I wouldn't be wasting money on checking if its an unlikely cause at this stage.

Yes but, do all THREE fans operate.....sit with it idling and observe the fans as the temp rises and report back.
