By surging do you mean that the revs keep going up and down on their own? If so is it doing this on idle? My problem was on a 2.5 V6 petrol, after getting warm on idle it would go from normal idle to 1200 rpm and back constantly.

Don't ask me how much I wasted by getting the garage to attempt to fix it! The general consensus is that was an air leak somewhere on the breather side, Daz (Darth Loo Knee) had a quick look when he was over and he was certain that this was the problem. The trouble is that it can be a tiny leak and a pig to locate. I have had the plenum and breather pipes off a couple of times meticuously cleaning and checking that they are airtight, it appears to have worked although I never found anything conclusive. A further common cause is the idle control valve (ICV). If you are looking for expert help Daz is a man to talk to.  ;)
