Title: Auto Gearbox Problem
Post by: coop1952 on 23 September 2010, 09:08:46
My 2002 V6 Auto box is causing problems. It has got progressively worse and the problems are now:
a) it clonks into most gears
b) in the morning, when I put it into reverse, it takes about 3 seconds before it seems to engage.
c) when the engine is hot (after about 15 mins of driving), when I pull off from a standstill, it seems to stutter, almost like the car is misfiring. I thought it was a misfire so had it checked to see if any codes came up - there was none.
Most these problems only occur when the engine is fully warmed up, apart from the reverse problem which goes away.
There is a gearbox specialist - Hardy Engineering at Leatherhead in Surrey which I was recommended to see. But before I take it there, is there anyone in the club who could shed some light on what they think my problem could be before I have to spend serious money. Over the phone, they said it could mean a new box which would cost around £1500. Quite frankly, if that were the case, I would probably scrap the car (however much I love it). The car has done about 95,000 mls. I had the ATF and filters changed about 3 months ago when the problems first started but this hasn't helped.

Thank you Brikhead. Would the box off your T reg car fit straight onto mine?

What I shall probably do is get it checked over by the gearbox specialists I mentioned. If they say it will require a replacement box, I will be back to you.

Can yoiu tell me where abouts you are?

As long as the box is an AR35 you will be fine best to change torque converter as well by all accounts.

£1500 for a new box seems a bit high you could by a decent omega for that ::) ::)
