Hi
was just wondering what the best thing to do with my car is, It has given up driving without overheating, the mechanic thinks it is the head gasket and possibly the water pump and the pressure has cracked the water tank but i just cannot afford the repairs ...one side of the car has a dent / scratch, i know it is not much use to anybody but as i am desparatly trying to save for a new car was wondering if it would be better to scrap or sell? :'(

Get one of the "people who know" from the site to come to you and give you a PROPER diagnosis. Might cost you their petrol, or they might do it for nowt... but these are folks who KNOW omegas.. and many garages don't.
I'm not saying it is NOT an headgasket .. it might be, but it could also be other, cheaper things.. and a head gasket done by one of the guys here is not as expensive as you might think.

you may have just given us the answer unwittingly...
You have a cracked header tank?
these can crack with age, and once the water system is no longer airtight the water will boil easily, giving overheating...if it is airtight the water rarely goes over about 90. assuming the rest of the cooling system is in good order.

Good spot Jim :y :y :y
and a new header tank is less than £30 I believe !!

would this also explain the car being juddery on acceleration? I have had a mechanic have a look who suggested it was the head gasket (very trusted mechanic-dads friend lol). The heater in the car didnt work engine overheated occasionally , then one day whilst driving it went really juddery with steam coming out the bonnet, the mechanic advised the tank was cracked and the head gasket was probably gone although his test said it wasnt. I just cant afford the hours of mechanics work to get it properly checked in case it need £££££s of work done aswell..had kind of given up on the car??? :-/

i am not a mechanic but if a car isn't running at correct temp who knows what other problems it will throw up :y

You said it mate - do not alarm the OP without an expert having a closer look. Jimbob's post may have said it all, or could be a simple airlock, or radiator needing backflushing etc.

If the sniff test said NO then its a good guess its not the HG, not 100% but a lot of other things could have caused this that are MUCH cheaper and eaisier to sort than replacing a Head Gasket and surley cheaper than buying a new car :y

ok might get the mechanic to relook at it :-/
