I think my selector switch is on it's way out.
Symptoms:
Most times (since Tuesday), after 15-20 mins, the spanner light comes on, and the 'box stays in top gear.
It still revs up OK and can reach illegal speeds, so I don't think it's the limp home mode being employed
I can use the gears manually, but it clonks a bit when moving up from 1st to 2nd.
did it again coming home tonight, stopped for petrol (ten mins max) got back into the car and all is well again.
Twice, it's been fine, so I'm wondering if it's either the switch becoming worn inside, needs some white grease or simply a connection/wire with a break in it.
Car: 2001 MV6 2.6 estate.
Any ideas on the most likely cause?

Nobody? :o
-
are the lights on the selector switch flashing or doing anything other than normal? Sounds like its just low on ATF. Check the level, on a flat surface, engine running, it should be level with the drain plug :y
-
Any developments on this Pedro. Very interested as mine done exactly the same today.
-
Hmmm, any chance of any codes?
-
Stopped doing it since the front wishbones were swapped out last weekend.
Perhaps the MPG will get better when it's tracked up!
Weird......

Some 2.2's can be 'pedal tricked' but they are quite rare
-
Pedal test didn't work.

Rufus. Have you checked your auto box oil level as per Tunnie.? in fact has the oil been changed in the last say 80k miles.
-
Gonna check the fluid levels yes.
As for when it was last done. The previous owner (and an oof forum member) did say it was done @ 90,852 miles. The mig has now just covered 102400 mies.
-
Level shouldn't have dropped in 10k have you had the codes read yet rufus?
-
My mate who works for the local rozzers is on holiday for the week, so will have to wait a while till he comes back and can Tec II it for me.
-
Started doing it again, so got it read tonight.
No codes.
Bet it's the selector switch or connections. ::)
Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I can find the selector switch and is there a gearbox ECU? If so, where's that please?

A late update to this one.
My chap with the Tech II had a play and it turns out it's a solonoid. 2nd to 3rd.
No idea if they are replacable or if it's new gearbox time :question
Any info appreciated.
-
just change the solenoid for a good s/h one :y
-
Any clues as to what's involved? Are they in the box? any setting up to do afterwards?
-
the solenoids are ( very ) internal to the 'box. I'd change one, but more on a "challenge" basis than anything else.
Pete - selector is on the side of the transmission, underneath a tin shield which is held on by 3 x M6 screws. Follow both the wiring and the selector lever down the gearbox and you'll get to it.
