Title: Rear blind help please
Post by: Bourne on 24 September 2010, 19:35:39
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to retro fit an electric rear blind into a rear parcel shelf without one?
I can get a blind ,but its not in a shelf.
If so , what's involved. Mine has bose setup under the shelf by the way . Is this a problem - Thanks.

The easiest way is to get an Elite rear shelf with the blind still attached. As long as yours has the cabling in for the blind that is :y

As  said, easiest way is to find one the right colour with shelf and fit that, although some have cut the original shelf, then plug and play, just pull the blank out the dash and push the new button in.

My shelf was very firmly glued in by the rear screen sealant so would not come out easily, and be careful not to let the bolts on the shelf under side damage the speakers when it does comes out.

..Hope you managed to sort out a blind for your car, I never had a car with a rear blind before it would be really useful but I tried to get my blind to work & it just makes a clicking noise... :-[

In the boot, left hand side under parcel shelf, connector lives there. Just plug and play

Re blind not working just making clicking sound.
Suggest that you disconnect power connection - inside boot high up on the left at the back, try it again, if no clicking then it is getting power. Mine was the same, followed the guide on the OOF guide section to remove shelf and blind unit. Then dismantled the mechanism unit, I was lucky in that the spindle of one of the cogs had jumped out of its bush, reassembled and it worked great. Pig of a job to get the shelf out, watch for the bolts fouling on the bose speaker units.  ;)

Had the same issue on mine, press the button and hear a click from the area of the back shelf, but no blind deployment.

I was working up to taking it all out and dismantling it, then one day I thought 'I wonder if it will work with the engine running' and lo! it did! Had to rev to about 3k rpm, but it works every time.

Possible battery issue? :-/

You can always do the second hand car dealer trick and spray the shelf with matt black spray paint. Don't laugh it really does work, and works well especially on rarely used trim bits.

I have done this on a shelf and on a headrest  :y

Just to add the dealers used to get hatchbacks in with massive holes in rear parcel shelves where people fitted speakers. They bought any colour shelf for the car, and just painted it. Tenner for shelf, £5 can of paint = much higher price for car they are trying to off load.

Just remember lots of thin coats, it will look rubbish if you don't put enough paint on, and you must spray from all angles.

I promise you it does work, it may leave a slightly rough surface, but who will no on a parcel shelf.
