Title: Car conks out going down hill
Post by: Road Hog Mad on 28 September 2010, 11:00:19
My friends car, (yes the one with the ABS ECU fault which is being replaced by a garage today at the price of £80).

Guess what? Another problem!

Whilst he was driving down hill, with the foot brake applied (revs will be low, something like 0500), it stalled.

Only does it when at low revs and when not accelerating.

Also if you turn it off and on again in quick succession it would be a bit reluctant to start i.e. you would have to rev it a bit but it would start.

Seems on tick over like it wants to stall, engine rocks a bit too.

My guess is the idle control valve, maybe it needs cleaning or replacing?

What cleaning stuff shall I use as a first measure if it does require cleaning? WD-40?

Specs. S Reg Omega Elite, 3.0 V6 Auto.

Thanks again!

Carb cleaner, mine took several applications before it improved matters, then a lite oil.  :y

Definately NOT WD40!!!!!

Use copious amounts of carb cleaner then lightly oil (something like 3 in 1 machine oil is OK).  May need several goes to cure. ;)

Had a bad day with this car, will be run until the tax ends in April 2011 (MOT already expired July 2010). Abs ecu still not fixed (replaced with another duff ecu), drop links loose, track rod ends loose and as a result it rackles when driving.

So next year an S reg Omega 3.0 V6 Elite will be up for grabs, no MOT or TAX. Hmmm what will I get £ wise? £400-500? Full leather.

given those issues, plus no ABS, knackered tyres and wishbones, youll probably be lucky to get 1/2 that!

Actually, what ECU was it replaced with, from what car?

Sounds like it could just be the varient programming needs doing (engine size and gearbox type)

When I bought my old one it had a blank ABS ECU which caused stalling if revs were low, once it had the right program, it behaved perfectly  :y

Replaced from the exact model / engine / transmission etc. apart from that being a cdx and this one being an elite.

Suppose the ECU was just knacked, its money after money and my friend just can't afford it. He is looking for a Rover, Astra sized car, has to be AUTO though with 12 months MOT, looking at selling the Omega and getting him a replacement car. Any offers?

did I mention that I found a local garage with a tech 2 who diagnosed it for £20?

no faults as eml light not on, but no communication to the abs ecu, no faults from abs sensors either so its the abs ecu or wiring to it.

when we left the garage the replacement abs ecu worked for about 50ft and then conked out just like the other. wasted £80 for the man to fit it and £30 for a so called working one.

after looking at the car again, the drop links are loose causing the rackling noise, the track rod ends are loose but not bush loose, you can grab them and twist them, maybe they need tightening up? and 1 tyre would need doing at some point, it is legal but would be something on the cards.
