Title: Airbag removal
Post by: Vauxste on 28 September 2010, 21:56:20
Hi Guys

Need to take off the steering wheel airbag as I suspect the steering wheel might be slightly loose and I want to check it. Can anyone tell me the procedure for taking off the airbag and what size (I suspect star drive) the bolts are.

Many Thanks

Steve

Switch ignition off and disconnect neg lead on battery. (within 15 seconds of switching off).

Remove ign. key

Go have a cup of tea while waiting for capacitor to discharge,  Manual says 1 minute, but better safe than sorry, then undo two bolts at rear of wheel, can't remember the size.
Remove airbag and disconnect plug.   :y

The steering wheel should have locking tabs to prevent it from coming loose, more likely the column has play in it...

There is slight play in steering wheel when moving it up and down and left and right and it feels for all the world the wheel is loose. If it is a steering column bush are they easy to do or would a new steering column be needed

Many Thanks

I'd have the wheel off first to have a look. No way of knowing what a previous owner or 'mechanic' has done.

Just don't go setting off the airbag.   :y
