Had the omega 3 days now , and yippee my first problem. :(
the speedo has stopped working, which im not sure if its a matter of course, but the cruise is out , and the trip computer isnt reading right (im guessing both of these are run on speedo information)
Any pointers to what i can look for would be most appreciated.
car is a 2000, 2.5 elite estate auto
-
I could be wrong, but, ABS ECU... I believe that sends the signal to the speedo...
-
Check if the ABS and TC are working. If they arent it will be the ABS ecu as suggested.
-
Does the ABS and Traction Control lights work? these should come when you turn on the ignition.
Also does the steering seem heavy?
Darren.
-
no, the abs and TC dont work..
also steering is fine.
so is this an easy fix?

Do you mean the lights aren't working, or the tc and abs aren't working?
Sounds like it is your abs ecu I'm afraid, and no it isn't an 'easy fix'. Vauxhall apparently charge £800 or so to do the job.
There is a guide in the maintenance section, where you can do it yourself. I did mine, so have quite a few others. It is doable but took me six hours to get it off mainly because the six bolts you need to get access to are in an awkward place.

Remove abs ecu, send off to BBA-Reman, ECUtesting.com or another reputable firm and for about £130 they will fix the problem and return it to you. You then refit and all is well.
A second hand one can be put on but I believe you need to get one from the same engine and gearbox, otherwise it needs programming. The 2nd hand one could fail aswell.
-
When mine went, the light came on, and no speedo signal, therefore no trip computer or miles clocking up, then after a month or so my steering went heavier (I think as the speed sensitive power steering also takes a speed signal from abs ecu).
Others have suggested it might be a good idea to check/clean your abs sensors
-
as far as i am aware , its just the lights on the TC/abs that arn't working...
when you say a second hand from the same engine / gearbox, what do you mean by that..
also would a unit from a 2000 vectra gsi work?
-
Do you mean when driving the car, the TC and ABS lights stay illuminated after all other dash lights have gone out?
From the same engine/gearbox, I mean a 2nd hand unit from another car that has the same engine and gearbox.
Don't know about one from the Vectra, but I thought the Vectra GSI had a 2.6, whereas your car has a 2.5, with one being fwd and the other rwd (different gearboxes? I don't know) I doubt it. Anyway, if it's second hand it could go the same way.
Personally I would go for a refurb.
Other more knowledgable people might be along shortly to advise about 2nd hand parts and reprogramming.
BTW, this is an intermittent fault, but gradually gets worse until total failure. Who dod you buy the car from? They might have knowingly sold it to you like that. :-/
-
the tc/abs lights do not come on at all..
as for the vec gsi, they came in both engine sizes, and only changed to the 2.6 at the same time the omega did.
but yes it is fwd, but from what ive gathered so far, it looks like a DIY removal, with a refurb of my unit. :(
i needed a car in a hurry after my vec was written off, with working 7 days a week, and bought this car off the bay from a trader....i know i shouldnt have got this in a rush , but my hands were tied,as i use the car to travel the 40 miles to work...

You learn something new everyday! LOL
If you say the TC/ABS lights don't come on, it might not be this, it could be as others have suggested (I have no experience of this), that a connector is loose behind the clocks (especially if the clocks have been removed at some point. You'll have to diagnose the problem first as you wouldn't want to get the abs ecu off, especially if it's not at fault. I can think of better things i'd rather do!
If you put your location in someone near you might be able to have a look at it. There's lots of helpful people on here :y
-
ahh things could be looking up, as in the ashtray there are a couple blown bulbs from the clocks and 2 of the screws( which i think are behind the vents? , which suggests the clocks have been off, i will remove them tomorrow, and have a look at whats what..
i will also give the abs sensors a clean and hopefully , that may be all the problem is..
my location is bridgwater in somerset
thanks very much for the advice so far, this is why i enjoy car forums so much, the experiance of the members is priceless. :y

i mean, in your user control panel, update your location, so it show up on the left everytime you make a post.

Just hope that they weren`t removed because of an aforementioned ABS ECU fault

Oh no! I hope not for brisr949 sake! How cynical of you though! You're probably right! Unfortunately

Don't think so mate - they were removed to hide the fact that the abs ecu is breaked :(
Your symptoms are classic abs ecu failure :-?

Lying barsteward >:(

woul'd the fault be stored, and if so, if not rectified would the check light on th TID be lit, as mine isnt..

No, i have a 2000 vec thats just been written off, but i bought it back, as its worth a few quid in bits..
-
AFAIK, not from experience i might add, the abs ecu can't be communicated with, when it has this fault
-

Doesn't show on TID mate. Your abs ecu is I am afraid nackered.

I don't understand what you mean now. I thought this problem is on your Mig that you have just bought?

my vectra has been written off, so i went and bought the mig, which is the car with the fault, i just kind off hoped as im maybe breaking the vec anyway, the ECU may have fitted

I think what is being said is that the ABS ECU he has is from a Vectra GSI, that he already has to break... I don't think the Vectra ABS ECU will work as they are quite specific. check part numbers... I think I personally would find a safe place to jam my brakes on to see if the ABS kicks in (I suspect it won't) even before I pull the dash apart to change the bulbs...
-
what i was asking was is, did the seller tell you it was just the lights that weren't working (trying to deceive you), or not mention the fault at all (again, deceiving you IMO).
-

when i frist drove the car the speedo worked, on day 3 of owning it it didnt work on the work run in the morning.
what im afraid of is taking the clocks out to find no bulbs where the warning lighs should be...

Is your Omega the same age as the Vectra? or does it have the same 2.6 engine as the Vectra?
AFAIK the pre-facelift Omega uses a 3 channel ABS and the facelift Omega a 4 channel ABS.

Both ABS & TC lights should come on when ignition turned on and go off once engine starts.
If they are not on when ignition turned on then no bulbs.
Sorry mate think you have been conned - seller knew the problem - it only takes 10 mins to remove bulbs and put dash back in.
Repeat abs ecu had it.
-
Get him
-
just went for a little drive, no TC/ABS light illuminated when ignition was on, and i tried a safe slam on of the brakes, it skidded... :'(
ouch, oh well looks like a few hours work and a refurb of the abs ecu is needed. :(
thanks for all your help in helping track down the exact problem
-
good luck with it, also, not in the guide, but from doing my abs ecu i would recommend using a screwdriver extension (flexible type) Imagine a spine that twists and bends. It will make the job so much easier as you can bend it the way you want. A couple of quid on ebay.
IIRC you'll need some torx bits aswell

thanks for that, i have a half decent(ish) toolbox, but will get myself one of the flexible extensions..
also am i reading correct that the car can be put back together and driven whilst the ecu is being redurbed?

Yep ;)

Drivable yes but you won't have ABS, traction control, speed sensitive steering or speedometer.
A friend of mine got points on his license about 25 years ago after a police motorbike rider rode alongside him on the North Circular and saw that his speedo wasn't reading. Chance of getting caught must be pretty slim nowadays though...

You may have some legal redress against the seller (this is a vital safety issue) Joshwyatt may be able to advise. :-/

Hi, just wondered if the reg no. is by any chance x996 dau? Gold elite estate with 99k and a nice new towbar?
If so you may have been had as this was sold 24th sept on ebay for £700 with faulty speedo, seemed a genuine seller. item number 290477357020.
However 2 days after the car was sold it was re listed by someone else asking £1250 on a buy it now and a classified add and there was no mention of a fault with the speedo I assumed they'd fixed it.
I hope this isn't your car, but if it is I hope I've helped you with some info, as you could contact the original seller and they'll give you the details of the fault when they had the car.
Dave.

Why - original seller listed the "Speedo is not working"

the seller who was economical with the truth, hold him to account obviously, not the honest one. Typo
